The one that got away…

Model 27 four inch with a trigger job done by Kings Gunworks. I gave it to a relative and he sold it immediately.

Others were used for upgrades because in the past I bought used revolvers but eventually I bought new revolvers.

The two I regret most are a 3 inch Ruger Speed Six and a sporterized British.303. A couple of other regrets are a Liberty marker Blackhawk convertible .357/9mm and a Liberty marked Ruger Security Six.

On a positive note I sold my 1976 vintage Browning Hi Power and got it back a year later and I just acquired a 1979 Ruger Security Six. The last Security Six that I owned was about 35 years ago.

Off the top of my head, three Smiths.

At one point I had a PC 629 3 inch with the removable comp. Came in the aluminum case. Shot it with full house 180’s a couple times and let it go. I didn’t reload back then….. I’ve got a “deluxe” 3 inch now with some slab side combats on it as a quasi replacement.

I stupidly let a nickel 4 inch 586 ND go.

Last one was a 10-5/8th 29-3 Silhouette in the box. Wish all three were still in the safe…..

About 5 years ago it was a 681 at a LGS for $399. At the time I was committed to--and in the process of--buying an uncommon 686 variant and had my money tied up. We still had kids at home at the time and I just didn't think I could swing it but sure wish now I'd tried a bit harder.
Then there was the 547 that came up at a local auction about 3 years ago when again, funds were limited. Thankfully I didn't actually see how much it sold for, but based on how cheaply the other guns were selling it probably was a heartbreaker deal.

ERA of 1968:
My Police Department's firing range shop received two S&W Model 14 4" HB Dayton Special Revolvers from the Department's S&W Dealer. One nickeled and one blued. I purchased the blued one. After duty went home and wife informed me that I was going to be a Father. Money was an issue so I sold the Model 14 the next day. If I have "Grail Gun" it would be another Model 14 4" HB.

In reading these posts I’m thinking I don’t really have anything to mention that’s worth talking about that slipped through my fingers and then I began to remember. This is just one instance.

I had a friend that won a Snap-On Raffle at the Fairgrounds about 1986 that included Snap-On Tool boxes, top chest and bottom roll away boxes and I just had to have them for the new barn I was building. I traded him my Browning Highpower from 1976, Belgium, blue, adjustable sights, like new condition, and a NIB Colt Trooper .22LR —6” barrel, Colt Guard (brushed nickel) finish. In thinking back, I wish I hadn’t done it.
Oh well, they say everything is relative. Maybe so.

I have let a lot get away from me over the last 50 years of owning guns but there is one that bothers me most, and that was a 6 inch bbl full target 617 no dash that I had purchased new. Sold it to buy something else and it was an awful mistake. When I first read your post I miss understood and thought you were talking about guns we almost bought but didn't, and those actually bother me more than the ones I let get away from me.

My contribution is pretty humble, but I do kick myself:
Simple beater cop model 10 I bought around 2005 for $165 looked horrible ( probably 40% finish if that) but mechanically excellent and I could hold sub 5 inch 50 yard groups with it - shot it better than any handgun I ever owned, to include custom 1911’s
I just had to have a K with adjustable sights, and the 10 left when I acquired a 2” 15 also a shaggy old cop gun and while it shot great,I then felt I needed the longer ejector of a 4” so away it went and a 4” combat masterpiece followed which I still have. I sure would like the 2” 15 and 10 back. At the time these changes of ownership took place, I wasn’t concerned as economical used shooter grade K frames were everywhere and I ( erroneously) figured I could get replacements cheap when convenient- well these days older S&W are hard to find- just yesterday I stopped in 3 gun shops in my area and between them there was just one K, an older late 40’s gun that was less than expertly reblued - for $650! The hunt will continue

The list is way too long over the past 50 years!! One that sticks out is a Model 27 3 1/2" in excellent condition in a local pawn shop in the mid 1990's for $199.95. I thought it was too much at the time. Thought about it and went back the next day to get it and you know how this ends-gone!!
