The Problem with Mountain Guns

A pair of 45s

I keep them in different safes to keep them from multiplying. :D

On the right is a 625 MG in 45 ACP. On the left, a 625 MG in 45 Colt. I carry the 45 Colt in the woods. There isn't much in the southeast I can't shoot completely through with a 250 grain SWC at 1000 fps.

Nice pair.
There isn't much any where, that can't be handled by a Keith at a grand.

I see they make different heights for the front sight. What one did you use and why?

Thanks

Tony;
FS is .300"-which is close to what factory FS was.

A tip-I use .170" (I'm guessing, will measure for certain) rear blade. The notch needs to be deep enough to see the entire green/red FO insert-with top of FS frame level with rear blade (obviously...).
If the blade height is not tall enough to see all of the "ball" in notch, I have a tendency to shoot high when shooting reactively (fast).

I've had/have a few....

657....

...with its twin....

50' double action...

Two 629-2s and a -6...sold the two -2s and kept the -6 as it matched the two 657s and a 625/.45 ACP I have...

For me the MGs with a round butt have the best "balance" of all S&W revolvers. Just come out of the holster fast, get on target fast and good followup control.

The weight difference between a 657 MG and a 4" 657 is two ounces...

...The 686+ Mountain Gun should be a standard production item for another reason. It is the ideal medium frame Magnum...

I agree (with one caveat). The 686 with its standard barrel is a nice gun if you are going to shoot it a lot at the range, but a little heavy to lug around just to get .357 power. The tapered barrel takes care of that matter. Make it with a square-butt frame.

The mountain guns do have the stupid round butt...

And there is "the problem" with Mountain Guns, AFAIAC. At one time I was lucky enough to have one each in .41, .44, and .45 Colt. Finally it dawned on me that I couldn't take the silly round-butt frames any more and they all went on to good homes with other forum members. Hamilton Bowen put a proper Mountain Gun together for me on a 629-3 square-butt frame. What a pleasure! I feel better now. :D

Thanks to Doug M I will be getting my 50th B-day present. Doug M gave me info on a Mountain gun in 45 colt in Washington and it will be mine soon....

BIG THANKS TO DOUG M

The Problem with Mountain Guns:

Is that Smith never made the one I wanted, so I had my gun smith make one for me. A blue steel MG styled 45 ACP. And yes, I even had the grip frame done in the "stupid" round butt configuration. Guess that makes me stupid too, but then I don't really care what feralmerril thinks.

Here's the one I had built from a M25-2 with a Model of 1950 tapered barrel installed.

I even had the leading edge of the cylinder beveled, although it's not as severe as the factory versions, and in true MG fashion it has a fine bead blast finish.

'Nuff said.

It looks like you're missing a .41 mag. Then we need S&W to make a .32 and .22 in a mountain gun too.
