The Russians have gone in

Heard a very good point today. The final outcome of these events could very well tip the world balance to China as WWII did to the rise of America. At the end Europe and the west is left with major destruction in Ukraine and who knows where else. Russia is bankrupt and will become China's Walmart for cheap gas and resources.

So, from the reading of what's public, it seems like we are trying to get Ukraine:

-An unspecified number of Turkish Bayaktar drones to complement the 20 they use effectively now
-Russian-made S-300 anti-aircraft system w/radar (from NATO nation Slovakia) to complement existing Ukrainian S-300s
-Counter-battery radar systems that pinpoint artillery locations once a gun or mortar fires
-Avenger (US) light vehicle-mounted Stinger systems.

Grab your posterior, tovarisch!

Some good stuff there. But MIG 29s would be just too much?

Not sure what the Geneva Convention says but it would be hard to justify bombing apartments, stores, clinics, etc. because some civilians have taken up arms.

In the series of trials of Third Reich leaders that took place after World War II, the first charge in the indictment against them was that they conspired to wage an aggressive war. Putin committed a serious war crime the moment his forces entered Ukraine; everything else since then has just been the icing on the cake.

I have the feeling that if things continue as they are, a point may be reached in the West where engagement, regardless of all the fears of retaliation by Mr. Putin that are bandied about, will occur and we'll be in the war.

Respectfully, sir...we ARE at war. Ukrainian Member of Parliament Kira Rudik is correct: World War III has begun. We and other Western nations have taken the side of Ukraine, and we've undertaken actions to punish Putin and his country, to cripple their economy. The Russians, in turn, are conducting a cyber-warfare campaign against us (as they have been for years) and trying to harm our country.

No, American and Russian troops are not yet shooting at each other...but we are most certainly at war.

I would think, maybe 4-6 Migs flying down the length of that convoy would have been priceless. Only 100 rds. of 30mm but hard points for lots of ordnance. Woulda, shoulda, coulda, if.

At the risk of thread drift:

Seriously, is the Warthog
viable as an attack
(not infantry support) weapon
if the foe has anything like
Stinger missiles?

Stingers have a greater range than I realized. Here's some more info:

"The Stinger missile can hit targets flying as high as 11,500 feet (3,500 meters), and has a range of about 5 miles (8 kilometers). This means that the target is an airplane less than 2 miles (3.21 kilometers) high and it is visible as a shape (rather than a dot), then most likely the Stinger missile can hit it. They are extremely accurate."

With that many rusky soilders in/about Ukraine, who's guarding mother russia? Am thinking old cargo plane with bunch of older action actors delivering war crime warrant and arresting pukin.

You just gave away the story
outline for Sylvester Stallone's
next movie.

(In all seriousness, or not,
an elite Kremlin Regiment exists
to do a bit of protecting. Easily
taken by Sly and the gang.)

Interesting article from the New York Times, on the surprising effectiveness of Ukraine's drones. Most experts expected the Russians to shoot them down early on, but that hasn't happened.

Not to make light of the horror of what's going on over there, but Putin's army is increasingly looking like the gang that couldn't shoot straight. Inept, poorly-supplied, and unable to fight effectively with the tools they've brought. Apparently, they can't even protect their own senior leaders; according to reports, Ukrainian snipers have killed three Russian generals.

It's become a mantra with me when discussing this situation: Russian conscripts will never fight as hard to conquer Ukraine as the gallant Ukrainians will fight to defend it.
