The Russians have gone in

then this happened .....
I suppose using it as a shield, rather than a doomsday threat is an improvement.
Frustrating either way

Why did they take it?

There is a tactical advantage to owning ground where the enemy cannot shoot back for fear of catastrophic damage to their own country.

It's a chess move and a good one. Russians are chess players.

The other reason is that the electricity can all be rerouted to Mother Russia.

Russia gains........Ukraine loses.

Last week they were taking pot shots at it with artillery.
this week, they are moving in with an ammo dump so Igor and Dimitri have a new place to smoke and drink vodka again.

The European Union announced plans for a major military training program for Ukrainian forces. This is in addition to the existing bi-lateral military basic training agreements of Britain, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Netherlands, Denmark, and New Zealand which is slated to train at least 10,000 new Ukrainian troops every 4 months.

I haven't contradicted my position.

I said in my personal assessment at the start of the war that Putin's intent is to carve out a little crescent around the east and south of Ukraine to get the Black Sea oil and gas.

Once he controls all the seaports he controls Ukraine's ability to ship their main products.......thus he controls their economy and he will have access to trillions of dollars in Black Sea energy reserves.

At that point he can take ten years or twenty years or more to assimilate the entire country.

Eastern minds think differently than our Western minds.

We want instant gratification--the Eastern mind thinks in terms of decades instead of years.

That's why many Americans tend to insert their own thoughts of quick takeover into Putin's mind.

But Putin thinks differently. The Russian strategy is to very slowly grind the enemy down by turning his cities into rubble with artillery, even if this takes years...

Your "personal assessment" notwithstanding, Putin's clear and obvious intent at the start of the war was to remove Zelensky, install a puppet government, and take over Ukraine. Every move he made, from the attack on the Antonov Airport in the very first hours of the war, to the armor convoy moving toward Kyiv in the days that followed, clearly indicated what he wanted to do.

I grant you that the Russian view of warfare is different than ours, but he clearly wasn't interested only in the areas adjacent to the Black Sea until the initial goal of a quick and easy takeover of Ukraine became unreachable.

This still remains the objective, evidenced by the combination of constant bombardment at all fronts and attempts at infantry advances.
While their success is at best, dismal at this time, Ukrainian has faired worse in terms of recovering ground lost.

it's not actually a checkmate ... Gas it, Get free guns, ammo and vehicles.

And I'll grant you that Putin would have been happy to remove Zelensky, but he also knew that with or without Zelensky, Ukraine would fight and pacification would take years.

Putin is right there on site. He knows the area and history.......he knows the Ukes........I sincerely doubt he had any illusions about this being done quickly.

He is in NO hurry. He is not even willing to use his massive air force and air superiority to wage war.

He's invested years and he knows time is on his side.

This coming starvation winter with limited heating, water and electricity will take a huge toll and Putin knows it.

Even more Uke refugees will flee and their pathetic condition will garner worldwide coverage and shock and dismay.

France, Germany and the rest of Europe will experience their own suffering as Russia tightens their supply of natural gas.

Negotiations next June will be done in an entirely different atmosphere.

The U.S. and allies.......SICK of this problem........will be pressuring Zelenski to end the fighting and give Russia the land it has taken in order to stop the suffering.

Zelenski's support at home will be collapsing. The Ukes will not want another winter of pain and death.

Putin will get his crescent of land around the east and south and his rights to the Black Sea oil and gas.

He will also control all ports and thus the sale of Uke grains.

He will agree to a peace settlement and Russia can then use the next ten or twenty years to gradually assimilate Ukraine back into Mother Russia.

This has been my personal assessment, as I said, from the beginning of the war.......indeed, it seemed obvious from the start as the only possible way for this to unfold.

Winners: Russia and the American arms dealers who made huge profits.

Losers: Ukraine and the American taxpayers who funded the insane deluge of American weapons to a lost cause.

We are years from checkmate.

As for gas........that would be a fatal error that would give Putin an excuse to use small, low yield tactical nukes.

Which invokes Mutually assured destruction.
They have used gas since as far back as Chechnya and ethnic cleansing ... Its like nobody cares anymore

There may be some recent events that could have a dramatic impact on the Russian's commitment to continue their aggression.

I believe that it was last weekend when someone (??) attached some explosive charge (dynamite ?) under the driver's side of the car of one of Putin's close associates. The explosive was remotely detonated with great success. Rumor has it that the successful person escaped to another country. However, the intended victim was not driving the car. At the last minute he decided to come home in a different car. It was the daughter of the intended victim.

Now others in the Soviet Union are having some serious soul-searching thoughts. Could this happen to me, too?? Answer-it certainly could! (and probably will) This should also provide the Ukrainians with time to re-think their resistance strategies. Maybe there is a much better way to end this invasion?

Stay tuned!

Cheers!

Bill

Small, low yield tactical nukes are the equivalent of gas and nobody is going to respond with strategic nukes and end the world........especially over something as insignificant as Ukraine.

Ukraine will not use gas because they know that Putin would respond with tactical nukes........they'd just be making it easier for him to reduce them to rubble because he'd have to use fewer artillery shells and cruise missiles.

So insignificant that the war there has
revitalized NATO beyond anyone's
expectations a year ago.

So insignificant
that nations throughout Europe have
pitched in with vast amounts of direct help.

So insignificant that the loss of some if
not all its wheat production has and will
affect the well-being of people's lives
around the world.

So insignificant that
the war has awakened many multitudes
of just how important freedom is.

No, just so insignificant that the nuclear powers will not risk destroying the whole world over it if Putin used low yield nukes after the Ukes used gas.

That's why the Ukes will never use gas.

Nuclear war over this? Come on.

How many Americans are ready to end their world over a dispute between Russia and Ukraine?

I'd be surprised if there were more than two percent.

Face it.

If that means that the Uke/Russo war is insignificant.......it is what it is.

It's sure as hell not significant enough to die over.

Glad the French didn't think we were insignificant in 1776.
Had they not helped we might be speaking in English now.

what he seems to neglect is that Putin already has claws in Georgia and Moldovia as well. This indicates that this does not end with Ukraine. This is why we are pulling so hard for them.
He is, unfortunately correct in some of his observations that this has a very high likelihood of ending with the absorption of Ukraine into the Russian state.
The lines remain stagnant

I don't know that that is why we're pulling so hard for them.

I suspect it's the same reason we pulled so hard to get into the dispute between North and South Vietnam.

Our Media brainwashed us.

And the weapons sellers made billions.

Funny how that works........over and over and over again.
