One of the responders mentions having a derringer in 270 Weatherby, and says the bullets stick out the end of the barrels. That brought to mind this little episode, one day at the gun shop.

I was arguing with another feller that 303 British brass could be used to make 410 brass shotshells. He insisted that it would not work, as 303 would not fit in a 410 gun. Easy way to prove it. So I got a box of 303 off the shelf, and then started checking out the shotguns. No 410s in the shop. There was, however, an American Derringer in 45/410.

So I pulled that sucker out of the case, dropped two 303s in it, shut it, and said, "See, they fit fine". Then I looked at the gun, with the tips of the bullet noses sticking out of the barrels, and asked, "Hey, you wanna take this out on the range and see how it shoots?"

For some reason he declined, so I unloaded it and put everything back.

The stuff that happens when you ain't got no customers.

Not my original idea, but I tried this and it works.

Euro 9.3x74R brass will fit in a .410 3" chamber. I purchased 40 Norma cases from Midway to use in my Contender 10" 45/410 barrel. 20 of them were blown out to conform to the chamber with a variety of methods.

I now can load 45LC lead bullets and they actually fit into or near the throat with no 2" freebore to travel, as they do with regular 45LC ammo. Accuracy sucked with 45LC ammo, but is actually pretty good now with the blown out euro brass.

I use Trail Boss and it puts a 250gr lead bullet over the chrony at about 800-1100 fps, depending on the load. I could go higher velocity with something like IMR3031 (like I use in the 45/70), but these shoot fine and don't punish my shooting hand.

I've want to try these loads in the little 4" two shot Bond Arms 410 one day. It may be an excuse to buy another gun.
