I was looking for a shooter grade Model 27 that would fit my budget when I happened upon this nearly pristine 3.5" 5-screw model. As any thinking person would do, I threw out my budget and grabbed it for $1375.
Having spent that much, another $75 for a letter was a no-brainer, and it was well worth the money. Don was kind enough to include a copy of the original invoice with the letter.
It shows the .357 shipped to the noted police supply house of George F. Cake Co. in Berkeley, CA on May 2, 1952 for "Max Mayfield, Sheriff of Colusa County."
The obit from the Sacramento Bee summarizes Sheriff Mayfield's long career nicely but I found another article from my local paper that brings him closer to my home in West Texas.
It notes that, a year after he bought the .357, Sheriff Mayfield and a deputy stopped by our county seat to pick up a prisoner to take back to California.
