I just got in my new m&p 10 (haven't fired it yet, but am now saving up for ammo)...so-I was curious-is the stock supressor that comes on it any good? it looks weird, but I remember when I was in the Corps back in the early 1980's and they were phazing-out the m-16 a-1's (remember the full-auto version? Not worth a damn in my opinion) alot of nay-sayers didn't think the a-2 and its weird "birdcage" flash suppressor was gonna work and now look at the standard issue...anyway, sorry to ramble but is the stock m&p 10 flash hider any good or what? seems like everyone on the forum is taking them off and replacing them...just curious if the performance on them is really awful (bad enough to replace on a brand-new rifle?) Am interested on first-hand expirence before I shell out more $$$. I appreciate everyone's opinion here. Great forum for a great rifle!

In my case, I'm replacing the stock flash hider with a SureFire muzzle brake/flash hider. I'm doing it because I plan to set up an NFA trust shortly and order the SureFire suppressor, which mounts directly to the brake.

I changed mine to a Veltor VC-301 and could not be more pleased. I have not fired at night but it helps keep the muzzle down without the increased noise of many brakes.

As for true flash suppression, I have found none superior to the Smith Industries Vortex.... of course, if you plan on going with a can, the point is moot, you should purchase the hider that has the quick disconnect for your specific can.... I have an AAC can with a QD, but it is a brake, and USELESS for flash suppression on its own... kinda doesn't matter as a sound suppressor is the best flash suppressor of them al LOL..... Yes, the Smith vortex is an awesome unit for killing flash..I have two AR's with them. For a combination brake-- hider check out Rainer XTC they do a good job on flash and control the muzzle flip very well but will put a lot of noise on any shooter next to you.

I just installed a Grizzly Hunter muzzle brake on my two M&P 10s and will fire them today. After much time on this board I decided that there were just 2 good reasons, at least for me:
1. Muzzle rise after discharge is supposedly greatly reduced and the ability to quickly re target...One of the downfalls of the M14s that still kick like a mule.
2. Recoil is supposedly reduced to that of a .223 and I am teaching my 12 year old twins (boy and girl) to shoot a man's weapon.
3. I remain a major fan of the M14 and M1A having three of them but at my age they seem to be getting a bit heavy, especially with a scope on them. I am giving the M&P 10s a try and am gaining some respect, but really dislike their sensitivity to ammo-- while my M14s swallow just about anything. At this point I still prefer the M14...sorry
PS In 1968 I was really pissed off when they took away my M14 in Vietnam and gave me that Mattel Toy. Glad I only had 30 days left there and came back with all body parts and no STDs!

PS Before you fire your new M&P 10, be sure to break it down and clean thoroughly, followed by lots of oil! I had untold grief with that. Someone ought to do a decent post about what to expect from your new M&P 10?
Then, don't stock up on a bunch of ammo until you find what the machine will eat. My M&P10s seem to like American Eagle as well as bulk ( 1,000 rd) Lake City. All the other stuff they won't eat, my M14s are happy to fire with out fail.

Dear vfin, I have no opinion of the Grizzly brakes as yet (It has been raining here all day) but have to ask, do you have a financial connection to Jeff?. Either way the cheerleading should tone down a little bit.
If these things are as great as you say...I'll be the big cheerleader but I don't know yet, and even then will not have a bunch of others to compare to.

Ya see, my recommendation is based upon the fact I own Grizzly's Defcon1 & "The Hunter" muzzle brakes. They truly have reduced recoil well over 60%.
The Defcon1 is mounted on my SavageArms Model 10FCP-SR chambered in .308 and "The Hunter" is on my SAW M&P10.
NO MUZZLE RISE, NO DUST SIGNATURE, and...when I shoot both firearms they feel like I'm shooting 9mm rounds. It's amazing.
I'm in the process of purchasing my first Grey Tactical Outfitters "Grey 01" 5.56 AR and when I have it in my hands, a Grizzly "Ghost Protocol" muzzle brake will find itself a new home!
By the way, my best buddie in N Florida has a Grizzly 6" fake suppressor/muzzle brake on his Armalite AR15 (5.56). I shot my bud's gun last month and it really felt as if I were blasting away with a 10/22 rifle.
Expensive muzzle brakes, YES, however, they are worth it as you'll one day see.

Unless your going to run a suppressor or compete in some sport bird cage does its job pretty well at hiding flash. Outside that the options are pretty much unlimited with better flash hiders, hybrid flash/comps, comps, brakes, breachers etc. etc. I'm using what I consider to be the best price/performance part on my 3 gun rifle. DPMS Jerry Miculek muzzle brake for $38 from Midway. Performance difference between that and other far more expensive parts is trivial at best. Only thing I had wondered about was finish. The finish on the one I got is much better than most of the pictures you will see. It will vary by barrel (I have heavy barrel) but it fits perfectly on mine with no gap between jam nut and threads after timing.
As for the M16A1... I loved all the ones I ever had (79-83 Army). Full auto and had the newer birdcage, newer forward assist, triangular hand guards and some a M203. I do remember seeing some of the older variants around with open flash hider, round forward assist and ribbed hand guards.

I honestly don't know how you can defend the M16 (a or whatever) in Vietnam. We in the Marine Corp were taught how to hit a target, even at 500 yards. That of course was with a M14 with iron sights, or without the even more crazy auto selector switch. If you can hit with one round why would you need to empty a mag in 3 seconds, and then just piss the enemy off.
I have 2 M&P 10s, and I intend to give them a fair evaluation, and so far I feel good about it. But someone who has not been taught how to use the M14/M1a with iron sights... ought to be more open to "old" technology.

Thanks to all for the opinions and advice! Great to hear from so many vets as well. I know its a little late but a small moment to remember our 241 of my fellow Marines on october 23rd 1983/24th MAU Beirut. I know it may not relate to this forum but the defense of freedom is some thing us weapons enthusiasts hold near and dear, regardless of what brand our firearms wear on the reciever. Oh, before I forget I'm gonna check the Grizzly. Sounds very effective!

Nobody seems to like the factory flash hider. I kind of liked the unique look of it, but I still replaced it with my businesses muzzle brake. It is simple looking, but some magic happens in the chamber between the muzzle and the end of the brake to change the sound. The first nasty crack is gone and the report is mellowed out, plus muzzle rise is less recoil is less and you don't blast your neighbors at the next bench with so much boom that you might become the next target.
