Read the book. The show is...eh. I sort've turn it on because I want to encourage AMC, but it's not as good as I hoped it would be. The show does a better job with Franklin. He goes around puffing his chest about being such a veteran arctic explorer, eating his shoes and whatnot, while Fitzjames is left raging to himself that the whole point is to
avoid having to eat your damn shoes.
If they were going to do a Dan Simmons book, they should have done
The Abominable. Capt Fitzjames is the only remotely interesting character on either ship, and trying to flesh out the subplots is just going to detract from the main story.
Abominable, on the other hand, has better settings, better characters, and a better plot. Many of the settings
could be trimmed to make budget, as well. About the only negative is that I think that television audiences would be a bit let down by the ending plot twist.
I've been watching it. Or rather, I've been recording it and watching later. So far, its pretty interesting. I'll keep watching to see where it goes.
Spoiler: not well, and not to the Pacific.
