The Titanic

Slight adjustment....

Wasnt it reported that the last song they played was: "Nearer to GOD are We?"

Nearer My God To Thee. This isn't 100% confirmed but regardless those were some brave and stoic men. There isn't any way to know how many people were saved by keeping the passengers calm. The scene in 'A Night To Remember" is tough to watch.

Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
E'en though it be a cross that raiseth me;
Still all my song shall be nearer, my God, to Thee,

Chorus: Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,
Darkness be over me, my rest a stone;
Yet in my dreams I'd be nearer, my God, to Thee,

Chorus

There let the way appear steps unto heav'n;
All that Thou sendest me in mercy giv'n;
Angels to beckon me nearer, my God, to Thee,

Chorus

Then with my waking thoughts bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs Bethel I'll raise;
So by my woes to be nearer, my God, to Thee,

Chorus

Or if on joyful wing, cleaving the sky,
Sun, moon, and stars forgot, upwards I fly,
Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee,

Got the chance to visit the Engineering space and speak with a few of the lads down there!
They have a very laborious task in keeping this ship running. Quite a an operation to see!

Filled with salt water I'm sure it will be invigorating!

The Nazi's made a Movie about the Titanic but was never released due to loseing the War but I understand that parts of the Movie were used in the later English speaking version.

Actually,it was released.It was release in fourty four-having been made in fourty three. This was one of many movies made by Goebbles and his propaganda ministry--for boosting public morale. From time to time--TCM plays it in the German language. Many of the extras in it were recooperating wounded German soldiers. I cant think of another title off-hand? but--it was made in color and in early fourty five--using tens of thousands of German soldiers to play the extras. Stupid thing too--those men SHOULD have been on the front lines instead of making this Napoleanic Wars epic. I used to ahve a copy of it,but long ago--l loaned it out to a guy by the name of Ivan--whi never returned it and several others.

I enjoy looking at the old photos. Thanks.

Wonder if they blamed global warming for those big ice cubes floating around back then? No doubt if this happened today someone would.

I heard last night on the news, that our dear leader now said we have a water shortage going on.:confused:

When I was on my flight to Germany--the captain pointed out that we were flying over the spot the Titanic had sank.Well,everyone including myself,looked out their windows expecting to see something even though it was about midnight--and pitch black outside.

Don't feel bad for looking. Whenever we transited across the Pacific we would hit the intercom and let people know we were about 3 minutes out from the International Date Line, invariably 3 or 4 people would come to the flight station to get a better view. :)

Survivors....

I too have heard the band played "Nearer my God to thee". My Dad told me he heard they played "Autumn".
Don't know how he knew that, as he was born in 1938.
Dad always said his head was a storehouse of useless knowledge.
I inherited that from him.:cool:
Jim

There were a good many survivors for a long time after the wreck. In the cemetery where most of my mother's family is there is a gravestone with "Survivor of the Titanic' on it.

PS Some people said they never heard the band play 'Nearer My God To Thee' anytime during the sinking. And for most of the time, they were playing to calm the crowds and the music reflected that. Well, I'm not saying that it just makes a good story but it would have been the right selection when the water was coming up.

LoknLoad went all in for this thread,
just wanted to say thanks.

My pleasure! ;)
Since the day I learned about this ship and it's name I've had an infatuation with it. I was even kind of sorry that it was found.
I think that back in the day I may have sailed on it had I lived back then! :eek:

Most think Astor was killed by the collapse of the false funnel. The federal court here in Norfolk is currently the custodian of the recovered artifacts. The Mariners Museum in Newport News displayed them a few years ago, people came in, chose a name of a passenger and at the end of the tour learned their fate. My mother who was a docent there at the time soon tired of explaining to people there was no Jack or Rose.

There is a traveling exhibit of artifacts from Titanic. Oh, by the way, they get really torqued if you say "The" Titanic.:cool:
We saw it a few years ago. You weren't supposed to touch anything but I reached out and touched a section of the hull, with my left hand, which has my Great Grandfathers wedding ring on it. He was married in 1913, so I thought it was appropriate.:D
They have a lot of stuff they picked up off the ocean floor. Dishes, dolls, glasses etc. It is really interesting. I encourage anybody interested in the wreck to see it.
