The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

Here is the best I can do with the camera I have. It doesn't look so bad in the pic, but I really can't get a good sight picture with it this way. I have my, probably destructive, idea about how to fix it-file or mill the top of the blade flat again and lower the rear blade by a similar amount, if necessary. I won't do it, though, as I don't trust myself to get it perfect by hand and I don't have a milling machine.

btw, I took the new (to me) HP to the range today and posted a 2-1/2" five shot group offhand at 25 yards. This was with a load that is WAY hotter than I usually care to shoot! I can't wait to feed it some pet target loads.

I understand how that could be distracting! I'd try painting a bright color up to the top line on the sight and see if that works. I did that on the used 27 barrel I put on my 28 (a slightly rounded front site, too) and it works for me.

Most likely import markings. I believe this member is in Spain.

Yes. That´s right.
I really enjoy my "new" highway patrolman (patrullero de la carretera in spanish).
You can check the size of this HP alongside with an Astra Terminator in 44 mag. with a short barrel s 3/4.
Best regards.

Proof testing is only required if the gun will be used for hunting and shooting for target or self defense purposes - frankly if you would like to fire the gun under whatever circuimstances.

There is no proof testing necessary if the gun will be part of a collection via a collector's licence. But then the gun will be illegal to be fired.

BTW it is not necessary to have German proof marks on the gun to be used legally. There is a kind of a contract between European countries who accept proof marks from other countries than the national proof mark.

Even during the time of Cold War the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) accepted the proof marks from the German Democratic Republic (DDR - East Germany) or from Czechoslovakia and vise versa.

Today it is common to place the proof marks less obiously but covered by the ejector rod e. g. I have a Colt SAA 45 on which you have to seek for the proof mark. It's a very small "N" for "nitroproof" and an also very small Federal Eagel on top of the "N".

Furthermore you may have the gun proof fired officially but let it not marked on the gun itself but on a kind of "passport" which accompanies the gun when fired on a shooting range.

Today it is uncommon to state the year of proof testing on the gun. This may show the customer in a gunshop that a "new" and not used gun is resting on the shelf for years and years without being sold. And it may rest there for some more decades.

Sorry, don't want to hi-jack this thread with a Colt but I have no other example to show (and tell) about placing proofmarks nowadays.
I bought this Colt SAA 45 from a collector with a collector's licence who normally needs not to buy proof marked guns to complete his collection.

The proof mark in this case is very small and just ahead of the base pin under the barrel.

My 28-2

I got a 28-2 Highway Patrolman on a whim about 10 years ago. The seller had fitted it with a Redfield scope and no longer had the rear sight. He used it for hunting. I did not intend to use it for hunting and didn’t want the scope, but it was part of the deal. The gun was tight, barely had a score ring on the cylinder, and was overall excellent. It has modest holster wear at the muzzle and on the forward edges of the cylinder, and some superficial dings on the back of the left grip. All roll marks are deep and sharp. It has a pinned six-inch barrel, counter-bored cylinder, color case hardened narrow hammer and narrow grooved trigger, and the firing pin is on the hammer nose. The un-numbered target grips do not have a diamond around the screw.

I got it for a good price. The serial number on the bottom of the grip frame and on the frame under the crane is “N504XXX,” indicating it was made between 1978 – ’80. Funny thing, the same number, but preceded by “F” instead of “N” is stamped inside the ejector rod housing. I see no mention of that in the SCS&W, and have seen only one other on this forum. “4X743” is stamped on the bottom left side of the grip frame.

I love that it has one of those odd markings (a “dingbat?”) on the right side of the barrel, with “.357 CTG.” on one side of it and “HIGHWAY PATROLMAN” on the other.

It took me a couple years to find a rear sight, one from a Model 27, finely checkered.

It is a great shooter. As everyone knows, the finish is not as bright as that on the Model 27, but it is even and well done. If I had acquired it 20 years ago or more, it would have spent time on duty with me.

Yesterday I called my local firearm emporium and inquired if they had any model 27's indeed he had a 3.5 one but it just went on layaway, dang , but he said I have this really sweet model 28-2 like new with nice target stocks, box, paper and tool kit. I said I want it hold for me, so today after work I picked up this beauty. Serial number S303XXX dates from about 1967 or so , its in very excellent shape indeed. I know it will be a shooter for sure. I paid a little bit more than I had planned on but no doubt I got a really good one here. :)

Very beautiful gun!

1967? That means that the stocks won't match. Did they have the original stocks or can the shop owner connect you to the pre-owner of the gun. Probably he may still keep the original stocks.

Thank you, No original stocks, the gun emporium where I purchased this I asked him what was it traded in for and he said this guy he knows buy guns keeps for years and years then decides to sell them, he said he bought four different guns from him at one time and that they were all in like new condition like the one I have. I asked him about the stocks he said this is the way he bought it, so I don't really care about the original stocks I am just happy I got a really nice new looking model 28 :)

I recently picked up a 4" 28-2 with an N and 5 digit serial number. That would make it pre N100000 and in fact mine was built in 1972 according to SW. Currently at SW for refinishing.

Here is my contribution to the "Ultimate" thread.

My recently purchased 4" 28-2 Serial# N905XX (is that odd that it only has a 5 digit serial#?)

I need to get the correct grips for it, but I'm still happy!

I can't wait to get out and shoot it! Short of hiking out on the snowshoes, there is too much snow to get out to the end of our field where we usually target shoot. ATV's were stuck repeatedly this past weekend. Ah well, it will melt soon and I can give it the test run then... Got to love this hill country.

This one is the same one from post #1201 on this page, but now it's mine :)

It shipped two months after I did in 1963, so Kris was good enough to sell it to me so I'd have a nice birth year gun. It also fills the hole for a 4" HP in my collection.
(thanks again Kris!!)
