I have a set of diamond magnas for that revolver, but once I put the stags on, I liked the look so much, that they are there to stay. Something about the brushed bluing and the stag really works for me.

My first handgun was a M28 purchased in 1966 for $98.00.Have not had one until today when I happened on a 99% 4" # N6XXX (cannot remember the last 3 #'s)for $475.00.Getting back to where I started with my S&W's(and Winchesters).Grips are magna's numbered but not to the gun and have silver discs holding the medallion.There is a large "H" stamped on the rear portion of the cylinder.Was this standard on all the HP's? Will list the complete # when I pick up the HP and will post a photo.
 
I have a 6" no model stamp Highway Patrolman that was my dad's. S/N 1286XX. I think he bought it in the mid 50s. I have alot of reloaded 38's and 357 cast WCs I plan to shoot in the next few days. I'm a newbie to this site and have learned tons from your posts. Thanks
 
Here's a 79 or so build - N541,2xx. A little muzzle wear and on the cylinder (holster wear), but it has nary a mark on the recoil shield and locks up like new. Carried a bit, shot none. I believe she's had an action job because she's smoother than my 67 and 686, which are VERY smooth. I like her enough to maybe let her do bear patrol duty with me instead of my 686 or 629.

Thanks for posting these numbers. At first, I thought I saw a discrepancy, because I have two of the NYSP 520's and I know that they were made in 1980. Both of their numbers are in the 550,000 range.
Then I noticed that the 1980 date has numbers that range from 500,000 to 800,000. Why would this be? Was there a great increase in production around this time, or what?
Also, were the frames numbered before or after deciding what model number to make them into? My logic tells me that it was before.
 
I picked up a non-factory electroless nickle Model 28-3 at the Tulsa Gun Show today. It is not pinned but is recessed. The Serial Number is N2272XX which seems to be way out of sequence. There is obviously little wear on the breach face and it does not seem to have been repolished so it seems it was refinished when it was near new, There is also little evidence of peening in the cylinder stops. I will try to get a camera that will take a close up of the SN and Model number in the yoke recess. Any idea why the SN would be that out of sequence?
