The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

I just picked up this 28-2 s/n N2098XX, my first P&R Smith. It came with an unmarked blue box with no end label with paperwork for a Model 29 but a tool kit with a 38-cal bore brush. Not sure if any of this is original to the gun, as it came into the LGS with a collection of other Smiths, including a couple of 29s, so maybe the seller got some of the boxes mixed. At any rate, this 28 appears to have been unfired, although it has at least 50 rounds through it now!

That's purdy no matter what box it came in. The SCSW says your 28 was made between 1974 and 1977.

Super nice find.

I would like to add my 4 Screw Non-Model Marked Highway
Patrolman to the list. I have had it awhile and its time to get
it lettered. It has the characteristics of the others I have
seen on the forum. It wears a Standard trigger,
Standard Hammer, Magnas and 6 inch barrel.

Serial number is S 182032 which looks like it was
near the end of the numbers leading up to the Model marking.

Is there a list of numbers on the N.M.M 4 screw Highway Patrolmans?

This pistol was passed down to me from my father-in-law. He was Texas DPS for many years in the East Tx area. Pistol is in very good condition with only a couple of nicks. It has a DPS number along with serial number S327XXX so from what the database says on page 1 of this thread it was made 1968-69. I have not had the pleasure of shooting this pistol yet, but will be trying it out soon.

OK, my turn... I have had a pair of M28s for a while... one 4 inch one 6 inch... the 4 inch is s/n S1949XX (1959) - nice shooter, original grips, honest patina... I got from friend I was standing next to at the gun show when it was traded in to a dealer I shoot with... the friend later decided a N-frame in such a small caliber was silly... 44 special minimum for him... my first N-frame... the 6 inch is s/n N2770XX (1975) - very nice shape, box, papers, original grips and extra targets grips... picked that one up at Cabelas gun library... was priced too low... asked and they dropped the price some more...that worked for me... then they let me use a coupon and my credit card dollars... it was the deal of year... I would be broke and happy if that happened more often... luv this thread...

28-2 Brushed Nickel (Fake)

Hey all, I think I own a fake brushed nickel 28-2. My serial number is N59003X, on the bridge to the cylinder it says 77628 and F21. And I have found no "N" stamps other than that in the serial number. Doesn't matter to me, I love the gun, however I do plan to send her into S&W and get her factory re-blued. Any advice for me about getting that done.

Are you sure it is nickel? One of my 28-2s is hard chromed.
It can be mistaken for nickel. I wouldn't refinish it. It will not
increase the value, and you will have the cost of re-bluing on top
or what you paid for it. JMHO

That could be Armaloy or another type of hard chrome. It was very popular for hard use cop guns in the revolver days. One of the best revolvers I ever owned, and in the book of tears for selling it was my Armaloy'd 6" Highway Patrolman. I also have an Armaloy 520. It is a great finish for a working gun.

Need some help. I've owned this gun for about 15 yrs. took it as trade on some tile work done for a guy instead of paying me. It stayed in the closet until about 3 months ago. I will try to upload pictures as soon a figure it out. Got a buyer HOT for it but don't even know where to start as far a value. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
