I have he grips from a S&W Model 28, 6" .357 originally purchased in 1969 and later sold w/ Pachmyer grips when I went from uniform to plain clothes. Stamped on the inside of both grips are the letters: "N R." On the right grip is the number 325346.

Q-1 What is meant by the N and R?
Q-2 Is the number on the one grip a serial number to the gun?
Q-3 Can the number be used to relate to the type of frame (e.g., K, etc.)
Q-4 I note that the 1968-69 "S" serial numbers would cover the 325346 IF the number is actually a SN. True or just a coincidence?
Q-5 Any thoughts re what, if anything, all this means?
Q-6 Can any of this (e.g., the number on the grip) be traced to the current owner so I can repurchase the gun?

revans, that is a pretty good price as the 22s are popular now. You might start a new thread with your question and get more answers. This thread is about the model 28s. Welcome to the forum.

You originally posted about a K-22 which is a K-frame .22LR. K-22s are highly sought after.
If you have a 28, which as you know is an N-frame .357 Mag, in 95% or better condition it too would be worth about $400-$450.

I found this the other day and had to run back this morning and get it. It's my first N frame, 28-2 in Serial # S322XXX. It's in wonderful condition, but not so perfect I wouldn't want to shoot it and enjoy it. This is a little brighter photo exposure, but it was taken before I really cleaned it up.

I just came in to my 2nd Highway Patrolman... an unfired 1981 Washington State Patrol Commemorative. It was given to me by my father, who retired from the Patrol in 1992. It makes a great companion to my 6" 1955 pre-28.

Still haven't gotten the picture thing quite right.........

Excellent thread on a great gun. I found this one yesterday in a local shop. It is from 1963 with a serial number of S232XXX. It came with the holster shown. It is fully leather lined. I was told it was most likely a Texas Highway Patrol Motorcycle holster from the 60's. It has no markings of any kind on it. Anyone got any ideas about it?

That picture brings back memories to 1972. That was my second S&W and my first 357. I shot that same gun and ammo combination for several years. I sure wish I had my Highway Patrolman back. Hey, who has one for sale???? 29R

Just one - ramsomed from the armory

I picked this one up along with a Model 19 a few years ago. They were just collecting dust since the 686's came along. When the finances permit I was thinking of rebluing, polished this time. (I'm new here, is that heresy? I already had to cold blue some bald spots. I'm going to send it to Smith, if it helps.) I'm also looking for some custom stocks. These were too small. The originals were, to put it bluntly, beat to death.

Mod 28-2, Serial N593XXX, 4", Pinned but not recessed. It originally had target grips.

I almost never get down to the up to 1980 threads but this one snapped my eye away from the antiques section, and I went through all 30 some pages of it and wanted more. So, I decided to show you my old shooter pre 28. It has an interesting front sight that someone in the past altered. It is a brass rod imbedded into the sight so that it appears to be a gold bead when shooting. Anyway, it's my favorite handgun that isn't 100 years old.

Hi all, first post here, and I thought I would jump in this thread, as my 28 may not be as old as some here, but I do appreciate a fine revolver.
Smith 28-2 (marked) no pin, recessed, no box, etc.
Serial number N951519
I strongly suspect this is a transition revolver, 81-82 manufacture.
If anyone knows any more I would be happy to hear about it.
This revolver came my way from my retired Chief Deputy. He gave it to me about 15 years ago.
It has home defense, hunting, and target duty now.

Well reading a little more, the book says the M28-3 started in 1982 so i believe you had your -2 pegged.

I suspect Smith was just thinning out the parts boxes when they made these two revolvers. "Ok, here are some parts we can make some more 28's with" kinda thing....

Just picked up this one last week. N454xx. Really cleaned up nice. I went to the range yesterday with some 38's and 357's. What an awesome weapon.
