The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

First post to the group

After spending two days reading all 600+ pages of this forum, I thought it might be time to upload some photos of my Mod 28. Don't know if the nickle-plating is original, although it appears to be. S/N is S2114xx which would give it a DOB in '60 or '61. I checked the underside of the grips and there's no serial numbers there. I traded for this a couple of weeks ago and immediately took it to the range. Trigger action is as smooth as you could hope for and there's virtually no recoil. I've got a couple of other pistols and there's absolutely no comparison to this beauty.

After spending two days reading all 600+ pages of this forum,
And you can still focus on the screen?! Welcome to the forum!!:)

Don't know if the nickle-plating is original…
Even if it's not, that's a good looking HP!

Were the wide trigger and hammer factory options, or is this more likely a previous-owner modification?
The Highway Patrolman was the value line .357 Magnum of the day. The only advertised options were 4" or 6" barrel, and magna or target stocks. That doesn't mean there isn't an HP out there that letters with a target hammer and trigger.

Hello everyone, first post here. My grandfather recently passed away and among the many joys in his life were gun buying/selling and hunting.

For my inheritance last week I became the proud owner of his 6" n.m.m. 4 screw .357 Highway Patrolman, serial #S1753XX. It is worn at the usual holster rub areas, non-refinished. As per the OP, I am letting you all know that I have found one.

This thing shoots like a dream, so much more accurate than my brand new Sig P220!

So far as I can tell from very detailed family history he has had this gun possibly from it's birth, or within a few years after. He had a Hunter brand belt and holster that also came to me with the gun. Every single hole from the tightest, 34" to the max size of the belt has been well worn. It's readily apparent that this firearm was a close friend of his. I picked it up to make sure that it stays in my family. Of all his guns this is the one he kept the longest and wore the most.

I'll get pics up tomorrow when I can get some good shots of it.

Thank you for such an informative thread!

Here's my recent acquisition:

pix710469844.jpg

Model 28-2 three screws P&R 6" barrel Serial # N5245XX.

According to the original owner, only eighteen rounds were fired through it. Could be; it's a sweet looking gun.

I bought my second one in December last year. Serial number is S1042XX. 4 inch barrel. It is in great shape (not good with determining % of finish) but lacks the original grips. I don't have a digital camera that will focus closely, but will try to get some shots when I get a chance.

ultimate highway patrolman thread

Hi all
Last week I picked up my second 4" highway patrolman.
It appears to have never been shot and has a serial # S215069
This is the highest # I've seen for a Model 28 no dash.
According to what I see on this thread it was born 1960-61.
This # must put it pretty close to the elusive 28-1.

My First Highway Patrol 28 (No Dash)

Howdy, Very new to the forum and not very good on this here computer contraption, I bought this not long ago and love it, the blueing is in excellent shape and has not been fired much at all but that will change soon, love the forum and look forward to learning from the pro's here. I'll try to post a pic and here goes. I think I have the fever already and now want a model 29. Well, I got something on the screen ????? Here's hoping. Well there you go, I'll have to try again when my granddaughter can help this old guy

M-28-2, S2232XX, unfired.

Here's my third HP, Fellows!
Really glad to get it! Not a shooter, it's unfired. Notice the lack of a turn ring.
Dick
Complete Serial # 223206

Congrats! Love the 4" HP!!
Pretty darn close!
However, catboat posted S2156xx in post 241 and Speedo2 posted S2211xx in post 101.

I'd guess 1961 so probably just a month or two early.

Hello all. Back again with my idea of the "Ultimate Highway Patrolman".

If I end up buying it I promise better pictures with a proper set of grips.

Allen,
Every time I see that I get goose bumps..
I know that is not one of Khaled's stock;)
Good luck in your pursuit..:D

M28-2 Ser #N508xxx

Bought this about a month or two ago. Original owner says he fired one box ammo through it when he bought it in '78 and then put in his sock drawer and never shot it again. It has the very faintest of rings on the cylinder.

Very nice!!

I read with interest about the 28-2. Hanging in the gun cabinet is my old 28-2 that I bought when I started law enforcement in 1977. Dressed it up with target grips, hammer and trigger. Carried that thing for many a year. Use to swap out between carrying it and a Colt Commander. Bought the 28-2 on time from the local sporting goods store and it was the least expensive 357 they had. I think I paid somewhere close to $200. Wanted a model 27 but it was out of my price range as a beginning patrol officer.

I got my first "real" S&W this week (not counting the 642). It's a 28-2 N299xxx 6". It seems to be in really good condition with a light cylinder ring and a little bluing worn of the edges of the cylinder. It came with the original stocks as well as a set of S&W target stocks, a set of Hogues and 250 rds. I don't know much about S&Ws but I think I got a pretty good deal on it. Barrel looks clean so hopefully it shoots good!

I've been waiting for the day I got to post in this thread! Here's my Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman...my first N-frame :D Appears to be a later -2, as it possesses recessed chambers but no barrel pin. Serial # is: N950478

I finally got a Model 28-2 this past weekend. Its in nice condition, has target grips and a 4 inch barrel...serial number is N597508 which puts in about 1980 I figure.
