Thanks A10. The 4" is S275xxx that I picked up on GB a few years ago. In addition to the installed diamond targets the seller included a set of unique two-tone factory smooth football targets that turned out to be for a K frame. I've been tempted to sell them here but know that the perfect Model 19 or 66 will come along soon afterwards.

I recently found a nice 28-2 box for it who's SN is less than 20 digits off of mine. Can't get a whole lot closer than that!

I picked up the 6" HP with grips (S289xxx) at a Puyallup Fairgrounds WAC show around the same time. Still looking for the right box for that one. It's interesting how new the grips on the 6" look compared to how "aged" those grips on the 4" appear.

My third 28-2 and NYSP gun!

Found this at the gun store in my neighborhood today! I have one of the Model 520's that NYSP canceled after S&W started building them. Now I have the revolver S&W actually delivered to the NYSP in 1980 to go with it.

Model 28-2, 4 inch marked NYSP. Serial number N548XXX from 1980. Gun is in remarkable condition. Nearly no finish wear at all. Paid retail to get it $515 out the door. Had too-what are the chances of another NYSP 28-2 landing within walking distance of my house!

Just Bought my First revolver

Greetings, i'm new to this forum. I'm stopping by for some show and tell / information. I just purchased my First revolver today it it the Smith and Wesson 28-2 Serial # N119xxx with a 4" barrel. I bought then gun from a coworker for $350 it seems to be in good shape, good lockup etc. It has these bigger grips on the gun but also had the original grips (numbers match the gun) in the original box the gun came in with some paper work and also the price of the revolver that he paid for it, he bought it 3/14/1974. Does anyone know what year this gun was made? Based on the purchase date i would guess 72/73? Thank you for any or all the information you may have for me, and input as well!

CartBone69 - Take that guy out to dinner a time or two. That was very nearly a steal of a deal.

That was a HELL of a deal. I paid over $100 more for my -3 with the tiny original grips and a fair amount of holster wear last December. Ended up needing some work too!

I haven't been able to find a set of those large grips for under $100 either.

You got a great deal.

Welcome to the forum. For a first revolver, you did very well on that deal! You could almost say you got the gun for 1/2 price with that package! Did you get the cleaning kit too? The box, paperwork, grips, and tools all have value in the package, and the gun is in very nice condition. All +'s.

Thanks for the info, and no it didn't have the cleaning kit. I know i got a great deal, i even told him that that gun was worth close to $500 but he only wanted the $350, well originally he wanted $250 but i made him take the $350. Hes an older guy and he told me it just sits around and he never shoots it he just wanted to get rid of it he wants go buy a pistol grip mossberg 500 or something like that.

Welcome to the Forum CartBone69. As you can tell, this might not be the best place to go for a "balanced" opinion on your new Model 28 - we're sort of fond of them. Congratulations on your first (It's a beauty!) and I'm sure you will be getting some good "Karma points" from paying more than the asking price in this case. I've done that a few times with nice old folks who were uninformed sellers, and sleep much better for it.

One of my most prized possessions, 28-2, serial S281xxx, which was the duty carry of a retired CHP officer. He bought it new when he entered the academy in 1966 and carried it every day he worked in uniform until he retired. I bought it from him. Original box, papers and his leather gear accompanied.

Please add your own Ser.#'s to the mix , don't you find it interesting to see them broken down this way?
Thanks for your contributions, keep it up , ,,,Al[/QUOTE]

Hi Al, if you are still compiling a list of Forum member's Model28 serials, here's my three to add:

S3240XX ca. 1969 6"
N5161XX ca. 1978 6"
N5078XX ca. 1978 4"

This is very interesting information, and thanks much for your efforts in this. Sorry for the late, late, late reply.
