I am looking for a little help on a 28 with a serial number S2024XX. It is not in the greatest of shape, but I was hoping someone might be able to give me an idea what it might be worth. It is in "Good" condition, but the bluing is gone near the muzzle and some other places on the barrel. A red dot on a weaver rail has been mounted on the gun. But the original strap and sight are available. Thoughts?

I have no idea of gun prices in Canada but in this area assuming the top strap was drilled and tapped for the rail and the wear indicated I would value gun at $300 -$400 as a shooter.

As an aside I was born in Hamilton and lived in Toronto and Hanover also.

Glad to hear that you live in a country where the variety of S&Ws for a collector or shooter abound.

Great thread. Heck, I registered (been a longtime lurker) just to join this one.

Anyway, I've got a 6" pre-28, #S 1290xx. GREAT gun.

Appreciate all the learning and info here and hope eventually to be able to "pay it forward."

Model 28 end shake

I still don't understand how the Model 28 I recently acquired developed endshake, now repaired with a .004 inch cylinder bushing)The gun is in really good shape otherwise. How many Mags do you have to shoot for this to occur??? Thanks for any input you can provide?

I think it's more of a how many of what kind of magnums. Those full power 125's are rough on anything.

The sad fact is some come from the factory that way.

Now an official member of the Model 28 club...I purchased a late 70's vintage Model 28-2 that is in almost perfect condition. The only question I have is that the there were no serial numbers on the grips when they were removed from the gun. Is this common?

YES, target stocks in general weren't numbered to the gun. But S&W collectors never say NEVER!

Thanks Bob...you are right... we never say never!

Absolutely. I have a 28-2 4", shipped in September, 1980, serial # N5685xx, with original target stocks, numbered (stamped impressed) to the gun. The box label, definitely not a repro, reflects that it was shipped with target stocks.

NEVER say never!

John

I just traded for my Model 28-2 that I let get away 6 month ago and I am glad I did. My 4" Model 28-2 was getting lonely. But now I have my 6" model 28-2 as well so they are happy I think.

A picture of the happy couple would be nice!

Ya weren't shooting those .38+Ps , were ya?

Alas I'm lacking the model 28 in my collections. have the model 27 FBI commemorative and a 29-3 but no 28. Now that I've acquired a 610 the model 28 and 57 are next on my list of acqusitions.
