My Model 10's

Where would this be stamped? My heavy barrel model 10-10 is not marked
Interesting... looks like the last -10 I saw had its barrel replaced then because yeah the -10s I'm seeing online all have the traditional roll marks

What makes it a +P barrel?
The barrel is stamped +P which, according to S&W , means that it's rated for higher pressures than regular barrels.
It was one of the firearms I ended up with after my old man croaked and was made in 1994, exported as a PD firearm to someplace, and then imported back into the states by CIA - Century International Arms.
As far as I know the 10-10 series all had heavy "bull" barrels but among the disorganized paperwork in his gun safe was part of a receipt from S&W indicating that they had replaced the original barrel because it was cracked but I don't know if it had a cracked barrel when he bought it or if he cracked it as he did have a tendency to build hot loads for most of his firearms.

Then there are the 10-5's with 3" HB and round butt. I believe these were special order guns, not often seen for sale.
I've posted before, a large local SO had a special run of 64's 3" RB in the day ..likely 400-500 units...I've always wondered what happened to them after their transition to self loaders...could be a treasure trove languishing in their armory...which I still had some connections there to ask

It should not hurt to ask. You might find the sheriff in a good (generous) mood.

Carried nickel model 10 back in the day as a uniformed municipal LEO. Issued a 5" barrel in 1976 upon entering the academy. Carried it for a couple of years until the department replaced all the 5" with newer 4" models. My 10-7 4" like I carried. Regarding +P ammo, my understanding is that any Model Numbered 10 can handle. We trained and qualified with 158 grain wadcutters, but carried +P ammo on duty. One of my favorites from my accumulation for sentimental reasons. Great revolver. IMG_0129.webpIMG_0130.webp

I'll see what I can do...I guess I should leave the 2" barrels out to avoid confusion...

5" 10-5...

Hmmm, that seems to be my only remaining 10-5 other than several 2" guns...I'll have to work on that......Ben
Does that 5" happen to be marked DETROIT PD on the back strap? It looks like my 1973 issued piece.

Changing the subject a bit regarding .38 +p ammo. If you like the S&W Model 10 then you should try to obtain a nice Colt Official Police to go along with it. Colt stopped making them in 1969. Can handle +p ammo. It has a heavier frame than the K frame IMG_0031.webpModel 10. In the 1930s when S&W came out with the 38/44 heavy duty revolver, Colt touted in their literature and ads that the Official Police could handle the hot 38/44 load. My 1956 Colt Official Police with my 10-7 Model 10 from 1979.

Smith and Wesson has posted information about the PLUS P ammunition being safe to use in any of their revolvers with a Model number. I think that started in about 1956! I have no reason to do that with any of mine!

All of mine are tapered barrel if pre Model marked M&P's count.

I do have three 4" Model marked heavy barrels but they have target sights and are marked 14-2.

My brother bought this 2 times at different pawn shops. At the first shop he found the 10-5 4" with a beat up barrel and a lanyard ring. A forum member gave him a 5" barrel, and another member (now passed) installed the barrel for him. He sent the gun to Birdsong for a Black-T finish. He put some stag grips on it. He later loaned it to his stepdaughter. Later he walks into a different pawn shop and there is the Model 10. He was so pissed that he almost gave it to me and I have it today. It is one of the best shooters that I own.

I shot this group with it at 15 yds. (always one damned flyer) A Six a clock hold might be better.

I really hate it when you do something nice for someone and they piss all over your effort. I don't give guns to people any longer. For that reason.
