The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

Over the years, I've owned a number of 28's including one of the uncommon 28-3 shown in the first pics. Nothing at all wrong with it but I never did warm up to it like the older pinned and recessed. Traded it away but recently acquired a decent pre-28 5 screw 4". Not bad shape considering it is early 1955 production. The grips were rough and had already suffered a poor attempted refinish so I redid them as best I could. A little thin at the backstrap but livable.

I just got back from Tulsa and brought a Md-28-2 home with me. It is N-953027. It is a NON-pinned barrel with a recessed cylinder. Anyone else seen one like that? This one is like new.

That is a very late -2. S&W did not waste parts, and when a model/design change came about they would use up whatever was in the bin. Subsequently, you will see non pinned with recessed cylinders, non recessed with pinned barrels, etc., etc., in pretty much any combination you can imagine. They are unusual but not unknown. I think they add interest, but not necessarily value.

NICE guns guys.
My 28-2 magna grips are numbered 5432 and 5434, the bottom of the frame is marked 5433. Does that mean the grips are numbered to the gun or to two other guns?

Good evening Mr. Phelps.........

Sorry, I just couldn't pass that up! Your 28 was most likely an LEO gun at some point in its past. It's not uncommon for grips to be switched during maintenance. With the numbers in series like that, it must've been with several of its stable mates!

Thanks A10!
The ejector rod was loose when I got it, and the cylinder shows rub marks at the corners.
It has about .002" endshake if I'm measuring that right. (.006-.008) Would the loose ecjector rod cause the wear?

terry,

I'm not sure when they stopped numbering stocks to guns. But your gun is probably born after that date.

Thanks- I just saw one for sale....a bit pricey compared to my NYSP 28-2 and S numbered 28. Think I will pass that one up then.

Here's mine-S285xxx

Mine was bought locally at a pawn shop-the finish is a little bit rough(all the better for me since I don't have to worry about it so much) but it shoots great.

It came with a set of target grips that didn't fit my hand so well, and I changed them out for Magnas. I understand that the diamond versions of both would be correct for this, but since it's a shooter I'm not too worried. Mine also has the target trigger and target hammer.

Nice score, you don't see too many of these on the market. Many were purchased by the troops who carried them when the Patrol went to the Beretta 92 in the mid '80s. It would have worn diamond targets unless it was issued to the motorcycle officers, they usually put Pachmayers on them.

Any background on who might have carried it?

A10, I got it from a collector in your neck of the woods. I have tried to purchase one of these for some time but unfortunately all of my older trooper friends would not let go of theirs. I don't blame them I wish I knew its history. I did think that it was nice that it came from my area though.
