My Highway Patrolman # S-244

PHP:
image.jpg not sure exactly what I have. I know it's a model 28-2 serial # S2443xx. Hopefully the picture shows up. Original box, wax paper and statement I liability card.

If anyone can give me some info on the years and such that would be great.

Thanks

Well fellas I would suggest saving your $50. I contacted Mr. Jinks on the SWCA side to ask the following questions:

1. Were RR/WO options available for the model 28?

2. Were these features ever a "standard" option during production as suggested. If so, any idea when this took place?

His response is as follows:

Dan, that statement about red ramp white outline sights on Model 28 is not true. You could send the gun back and have it fit with those sights. When I ran the Service Department and we had walk in service, we did a lot of red ramp front sight and white outline rear sights for New York State Troopers. But the factory kept the Model 28 pretty much as it was introduced. In 1976 they did catalog it with target stocks, but that is the only accessory I remember it being offered with. Roy

It appears the factory would install them....but they were never shipped with them. I wonder if they documented the sight change in the records or not?

That would definitely explain why the RR looked so much like factory ones.....they were, just didn't ship that way.

Well I'll sure not question the man, he has forgotten more than I'll ever learn about S&Ws. I have seen a lot of 28s in that N500000 range with the RR/WO.

Correction

Thank you, Dot!
I have at least two with the red front sight, maybe more. I'll go through the safe and let you know if I have more.

Correction time! I finally got around to looking through the safe and discovered that I only have one 6" Mod. 28 (S2754XX} with the red plastic insert in the front sight. I have several others that I have painted red to see better. Sorry about that!

I just put some money down on a 4" 28-2 stamped with DPS-xxxxx on the left side.

This is a former Texas Dept. of Public Safety issued gun.

Me being a dodo forgot to look closely at the grips and get the serial number.... I was so giddy at my find.

It has these huge wood grips that look like Target grips and have a dimple in the top of the left side.

My two questions....

1. Would this have come from S&W with those target grips on a police gun?

2. The DPS number stamped on the side, will it be the same as the serial number from S&W or will it be different and/or replace the original serial? (did that make sense?)

It's got a bunch of holster wear but mechanically feels great. I like guns with a certain story about them and this old Texas Trooper gun will be welcome as-is to share space in my safe.

Pics once I get it out of Layaway.

I was browsing through the used guns at a local gun shop, today, when I noticed this beauty sitting on the shelf. At $595, it was a little pricey, but I told myself it was worth it, as I had yet to own an N Frame with a S prefix serial number - this one is S2852XX. When I got it home and removed the grip panels, I was pleased to see that they are the originals.

What you have Wilson is a very nice example of a Highway Patrolman!:) circa 1964.

1. Could have, a letter from S&W would tell.

2. It would be a different number, for their records. Serial number stays the same, can't be changed.

Got to fondle the DPS 28-2 I have on layaway today. As it has those big beautiful target grips I could not be 100% sure of the serial number.

There is a 5 digit number in the yoke (33xxx). There is also an N stamped in the yoke but it does not directly precede the serial number.

Is that likely to be the serial number? If yes, the SCSW indicates this was made somewhere around 1975/76.

When I go to pick it up I'm going to insist the shop remove the grips to verify the number on the bottom of the butt.

As always, I want to thank the fine and kind members of this forum for their help.

AirCommando... I'm very seriously considering ordering a factory letter for this one piece.

I'm thinking about getting one for mine, too. It's a Lubbock PD gun from 1968. Got it from the officer through a dealer along with his off duty 66-1 2 1/2". Should be cool to have.

I been wondering why no recent New posts about the m28 HP?
I see there still ongoing here.

Does it get any better than the m28 highway patrolman?

Bill,
I would guess they're getting in short supply. I have several beauties! What do you want to talk about?

New Guy!

Hey everyone! I am new to the forum and wanted to post my Highway Patrolman!
About 20 years ago I sold this gun to a Security officer and his son in law acquired it after he passed and sold it back to me 2 days ago!

So, it's cool to get a gun back that I once owned. This HP was the first gun I ever bought. It was back in 1985
and I'm pleased to get it back! I paid him $200 for it! Is that an OK price?:D
Serial No. 270xxx (1975).
It has some holster wear but all in all great condition with tight smooth mechanisms! Thanks for looking!
I looked in my drawer and there was the Ammo that I had purchased for it back in the 80's! Lol!
Best of Luck!

I've been away from this forum for several months due to computer problems and a torrid affair with 1911s, but recently dug my Model 28 out of the safe to get reacquainted with it after winning a Simply Rugged Sourdough Pancake carved by Rick Gettlein in a raffle, that fits the old HP perfectly and is VERY comfortable.

This is a 28-2, s/n N5928xx, 4-inch, with a semi-target hammer and smooth combat trigger. I bought it at a hock shop several years ago for what I thought was a good price until I found that it had a .014 cylinder gap. Nastiest gun I ever shot. Serial range puts it about 1979, when the QC left much to be desired.

After worrying with it for a while, I called the factory and spoke to a very nice lady in the repair shop. She said that it should not have gone out the door like that no matter when it was made, and to send it back. They set the barrel back, recut the forcing cone, and set the gap at .004. Don't remember now what it cost, but it wasn't much and was well worth it - this is now one of the finest shooting handguns I have ever shot. I bought a sound but battered and scarred set of walnut targets for $5.00 at a gun show, sanded them down, recut the checkering, and refinished them with tung oil to replace the ugly rubber Hogue grips that were on the gun. It's a mighty fine looking rig now, and I'm learning to appreciate Model 28s all over again.

BTW, this gun (N5928xx) is pinned and recessed - forgot to mention that. It's seeming like it's late 1979 or perhaps early 1980 - along toward the last of the -2s

Here is my 28-2:

I got it over a year ago. It is a 4" version, the only one I have ever seen in a LGS. I am glad I grabbed it when I did. It came with Pachmyrs on it, which actually feel and shoot great on it.

I added a set of N-Frame targets off an 80's revolver as it has the "U" SpeedLoader Cut-Out, but they work very well.

It was probably a Police Gun, or A security gun as it was holstered a good amount. The Lock-up and trigger are great though. It is one of my best, if not my best Shooter I have, along with my Sig/P226.

So this would truly seem to be one of those Smiths that was carried a lot, but shot very little.

Again it looks like the musical chair game with these is slowing down too.
I hope all of them found good new homes. I don't see that many N frames for sale now as we did a few months ago.

I confirm. K grips here on this 28. The difference is mainly on the upper half. The hole of the screw fits. Try it yourself ;)
