The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

I understand they are different frames, the N being larger. I guess having never owned an N frame is what is throwing me off so much. Is it that much more sterdier?

Yes. Before they were known as the N frame they were called the 44 frame. This is the standard frame size for the big bore calibers.

Here is my 28-2. Born in 66-67.

Enjoy.

Here's a Pre 28 SN# S113XXX (x's only cuz I cant remember the last 3) I picked up in Tulsa. It has diamond targets on it not numbered, but I am beginning to think were original
pre28.jpg

I have another one SN# N214XXX also a 6", and my best friend still has one I sold him 20+ years ago SN# N512XXX in 6"

I don't have a pic handy, but I have a 28 I bought almost 30 years ago, and long story short, decided to sell off some guns, and this one doesn't get fired in almost 25 years, so it went on consignment at a local shop.
It sat for about four months, with a price of about $350, in close to mint condition.

It bothered me the whole time, I shouldn't be selling a Smith and Wesson. Told the owner if people could not realize it was a good deal, I'd rather just keep it in my safe.

I brought it home, have been shooting it again, and what a great gun, on a great frame: Classic Smith and Wesson.
Moral: Don't sell your guns.

+1 richlab, don't sell even if you don't like it.

Here is my 6" 28-2 from my father-in-law N2602xx

I picked this up a few months ago. First revolver that I can shoot better in double action than in single action. 1974-75 vintage with a 4" tube:

I have not been able to down load a photo yet. However,I have a 6" 5 screw Highway Patrolman with a serial number of #111512 with matching serial numbered grips. Any idea of value?

Just another gratuitous photo to provoke an answer to a question I can't remember.
What's the given weight for an empty four-inch M-28?
Meanwhile, I was digging around in my recollections about buying my first Highway Patrolman, and I'm now convinced it was late in '73 and the selling price (new) was $125.00 plus tax.
Hope I figure out someday why this thing pulls my chain like it does.
I do have a pretty humorous real-life story about this one, having to do with a squirrel and the eave of an old house, but even thirty-some years later, I'm still reluctant to tell it in public for the risk of seeming to have colored outside the lines for a moment.
It didn't seem so at the time, though.

Here is my 28-2 4". Got it a couple months ago, but it is fast becoming my favorite 357 shooter.

CherryRiver,
I bought a 4 inch 28 in 1973, I paid $125.00, the same as you recalled. It was my first centerfire handgun, now I really regret selling it, I have been looking for another one lately. I don't recall the serial number range, but I do have a letter from Smith and Wesson where I had asked about a change of finish and they advised that wasn't offered on the Model 28. Dick

I have a concept of "guns that make me get stupid", "stupid" mostly referring to purchasing without prudent financial surroundings.
Does that make it sound nice?
I probably shouldn't admit this, but a Highway Patrolman in .44 Special would get me stupid in seconds. Yeah, I've posted that before, and yeah, you could call out for a Model 24, but a Highway Patrolman is different, and special in a lunchbucket-plain kind of way.
Yeah, yeah, a 28's a .357 and that's that, but if I can just chuck this drill bit in the press here...

Very much so . Thank you for your efforts !

While I like seeing my contribution as the low serial number , I was hoping an earlier one would have been recorded by now .

Picked up this 5-screw 6 inch yesterday so I thought I'd pose it with a 28-2. It has some minor pitting from storage but the bore is a mirror. S112XXX. The 28-2 has hardly been shot but I think someone may have pried the sideplate. You can't tell from the pic but the target stocks have beautiful wood.

Thought it was time for me to post my 5 screw 4" Pre 28 # S 111330.It is dressed in Keith Brown grips with the original grips(numbered to the HP)sitting next to it.

I've really enjoyed this thread, more so since I picked up a 28-2 a few days ago, that has some history. The serial number list at the beginning helped me to narrow down a time frame the gun was made.

My 28-2 is a S/N 94XXX and I probably paid more for it than I should have. However, it belonged to a friend who was a sheriff's captain and it was his duty gun. He retired and shortly after, passed away from a tragic accident. His wife decided to sell his guns and this was one of them.

The challenge I have right now is whether to leave this war horse as is with the holster wear, worn rear slight blade, etc. versus a rebuild to a shootable presentation grade. The grips are worn medallion grips with the usual wear a cop would have for a holstered gun, getting in and out of cars, bluing worn in a couple of spots and so on.

Has anyone done a full "restoration" of a later date gun like this?

Guess I'll add another for the data base.

Run of the mill 6" bbl matte blue 28-2
Serial number N197***

Came with magna grips, but I replaced them years ago with targets.

This gun must have a million miles of riding in patrol cars, ranch pickups, and on horseback.

If I could only have one handgun, this would be it.

I'll add my shooter 4" 28-2 from 1973, N1978xx.

She's been messed with, but mechanically she's 100%. One heck of a revolver!

Christmas in February.

Purchased a 6" Highway Patrolman SN # S116XXX, 5 screw, all original, all #'s matching, with non relieved diamond targets along with the original black leather basket weave duty leather this week. 1954 or 1955 I believe. Darn near impossible to fine anymore in my neck of the woods.

I think it was probably made the same day as BBBS' 6" HP. The SN's are real close.

Please add mine to the list!
