The 'unofficial' 58 Club

I found this 58 at a gun store in Phoenix several years ago. The store owner commented that he didn't know why anyone would want a fixed sight 41 mag - I was happy to take it off his hands for $350.00. It's seen some use and is not perfect but it shoots straight and still looks good to me:)

It originally shipped to Phoenix in 1970 (the grips are not original and I think are newer than the gun).

Dude that 58 and 10-8 together... Man that's like Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn. SEXY!!!

My only "beef" with the 41 Mag, is that you cannot buy ammo at most places, and that there are not any Speer shotshells for the 41.

There is another member here...Jellybean, if I recall correctly....that was developing some home-brewed shot shells. He sent me a recipe, but I have just not had the free time to make some up. The guys that work on the farm have seen a few big rattlers this year, and I keep thinking that I am going to run into one, so I have been toting around my CS1 instead of my 58 (the horrors ;) ) ....no snakes yet, other than a itty bitty garter snake, whom I relocated to the wood pile.

I have been reloading for the 41 for a few years now and have stopped hunting for the ammo. Although, my local pusher now has 3 or 4 different varieties of 41 for sale year round, and Bass Pro even had 2 different loads on my last visit.

NE, enjoy your honorary membership here, and if you're in my neck of the woods, you are welcome to make a range trip to rediscover the 58's with a loaner from my stash :D

Thanks for the story.

I really enjoy the tales of days gone by from the days where wheelguns ruled the streets. Anyone else care to share?

SAFireman

Thanks for the offer. Will do.

If they would have made a Mod 58 in 44 Mag I would still have a couple.

It is just easier for me to have as few as calibres as possible.

Again, nothing wrong with a 41 Mag.

Not so grasshopper, .41 Magnum is .41.

KO

Still in 10mm range

.40 cal = 10.16
.410 = 10.414

Intent was to show history repeats..

And a .38 Special is .38? Nope but still called a .38

Dump,

That Classic looks pretty well finished out....does it have a really deep blue like the older Smiths?

And..it looks like it has a red ramp, or was that your doing?

I also noticed that it has a screw at the top of the sideplate....does it have 5 total screws? I wonder what they were thinking...the original 58's were 3 screw versions....anyone have an idea why?

The finish is glossy, but not like the older ones. I don't know what S&W was thinking with the extra screw? And why add the lock if it's a "classic"?

The orange is nail polish. And it's a great shooter.

Does it have the 4th screw in front of the trigger guard?

I can't answer the question as to the lock....it seems a sore subject around these parts, but I would guess it was put there to allow those guns to be sold in 'less than gun-friendly' states? Maybe it is just as well.....some unseemly characters might try to pass off the Classic lines for the real deal. As long as she works good for you, then don't let it bother you. Is the action pretty smooth, or do you need to pull it apart and go through it?

Looks good anyhow....and I am glad to see another 41 mag out on the streets ;)

No.

The action isn't real smooth, but the lock-up and timing are excellent. IMO, more so than on my older N frames.

I can't think of a State that requires a built in lock. I think it's just all liability concerns.

Someone who makes decission over at S&W just doesn't get it from a purist point of veiw.

While looking for something else I came across the original

Parts List*Instructions for Use*Maintenance*Specifications Sheet for my Model 58.

What I didn't know was the correct name/model number for the revolver. I did not that S&W calls the gun the .41 Military and Police Revolver Model No. 58.

Someday maybe I will learn enough about S&Ws to maintain a lucid conversation with someone about them!

model 58 year of manufacture

This is wonderful to find a model 58 club. For the longest time I thought we were on the endangered species list we can unite and celebrate our cause.

My model 58 is # S327595 does anyone know what year it was made in ? I have had it so long I don't remember when I got it.

The best thing I have found it good for is providing a great sense of well being at night. It gives me comfort to know its there on the night stand in case I need it.

Thanks gary

The number you provided sounds like an assembly #. The serial # should be on the bottom of the grip frame and should start with an S or N.

The first one was made in 1964 I believe.

Charlie Sorry about that . The correct number is S327595 . Been a member of the club less than an hour and allready learned where the SN is located.

Forgive me but this is how the 58 should have looked. Sort of like S&W finally realizing that the Second Model HE was not quite right and needed to be improved to the Third and then Fourth Model with the barrel shroud.

cprhr Please tell me about the grips. What kind of wood and where can I get some for my 58 ?

gwpercle

should be end of 1975 ship date. One of the last S serial #'s before smith went to the N #'s.

Sadly, I don't own a 58! Just never came across one. But, I do own three 57s and a 657. An 8&3/8" and two 6" 57s and a 4" 657. All four have fine factory triggers and are extremely accurate with my reloads, both cast and jacketed. I can't say enough good things about the .41 Magnum!

Dick,

We can have you as an honorary member....it seems that you have been bitten by the 41 bug....you also have one of the more rare 4" 657's that are seldom seen. Please, post a photo or two of your collection. Those 6" model 57's are supposed to be scary accurate too :)

Thanks, SAFireman!
I'm happy to accept your offer! Please excuse the poor pics. I'll try to replace these three with a group shot of all four! Also, I plan on having my favorite dealer try to find me a 58 so I'll be legal!
Dick
