The 'unofficial' 58 Club

Winchester apparently has downloaded their old 175gr Silvertip deer hunting load to 1250fps. Ordered a couple of new boxes for hunting season to run in the 657 but the round just ain't the same! Much tamer!
So tried them in the ugly 58. Very controllable and little muzzle flash comapared to the usual. Kinda pricey, but if it works in your 58, it might be the best SD load out there.

Only a couple or three inches below POA at 25 yards.
 
Fun to revisit this Thread again.


So, are there more offerings or variety now from Ammnunition Makers for the .41 Magnum Revolver, than there used to be?

Silvertips have always been modestly loaded...1300 from a 6" and about 1225 from a 4"....this was through a chrono back in 1986 area...

I would have to guess that they've backed off a bit more. Dunno if I'll bother to chronograph these back to back but the felt recoil and muzzle blast is less with the new stuff. Muzzle flash is about non-existant. If I find another old box of 175gr ammo it might be incentive to set up the sky screens. Winchester isn't giving the new stuff away: over $1 per round! About bad enough to send me back to the rifle range...
 
Somewhere over here there is another thread that has a new box of Silvertip ammo that I ran over a chrono and into water filled jugs...it was about the same... It is always possible they have downloaded it again lately...

as an aside...greentops is alive and well...in the next couple of weeks they are moving from their current bldg.(where they have been since 1947) right up the street to a vacated gander mtn.i too love a 41 mag.!

A friend introduced me to Greentops some years ago on a multi-state gun show roadtrip. Have made some small purchases there (mostly reloading stuff), but what they were good for is having lots of odd current production S&W variants. Inspired a couple special orders for new Smiths when we got back home.

ETA: Ol' Ugly isn't too bad on the left side, but the right is a mess. (See Post #367) Still, it's better to me than my first 58, which although thoroughly tricked out with a ball lock on the crane, minimal cylinder slop due to a custom oversized yoke OD, and a great trigger job, was reblued. Just couldn't stand it! Sold it in a moment of weakness.

Guess what? You guys have me thinkin'. The earlier pic of the 58 with Jordan Troopers on it helped, as I ordered a set of those from Herretts a few weeks ago for my 4" 28. I like the business-like appearance of the 58..... a lot.
 
O.K.here are my two model 58's.The first one is an S prefix serial number gun that is in very good condition.I thought I was never going to be able to pick one of these up,but got lucky a few months back.
The other 58 is of the new classic series.I bought it first because I could not find an original no dash 58.The classic model actually shoots very good.I swapped out the new style grips for some older magnas that I think look better on a 58.

As you noted previously, I found 1997 published MV to be 1250 fps for the 175gr W-W load, so there ought not be a difference, but the 58 is much "better" with the new loads. I'm wondering if they didn't just change the powder for one with improved burn characteristics? If the bullets expand, then the exact MV doesn't really matter to me for a carry load.

At 1250 FPS or better...even if the Bullet didn't expand...the BG would...So...
 
Mmm, I could have phrased that better. Basically, the point is that given decent terminal ballistics, the perceived recoil reduction and reduced muzzle flash make the current W-W loading quite viable as a carry load. Which means there's more likihood of actually carrying the 58. Previously, it was a bit brutish. Now it shoots like a .357.

Scout,

I was looking at your photos of the original run of the 58 and the new Classic side by side and just noticed the 'Classic' has the top side plate screw. If they were trying to duplicate the original version (and added the IL) why would they add that screw?

I'm glad to hear the Classic 58 shoots well....it seems that all we hear these days of the new production guns is of their flaws. Thanks for sharing.
 
I see on the other classic N frames like the models 25,27,29,57,58,they all have the top right side plate screw like the old 5 screw guns.But I don't see it on there K or L frame classic series guns.I don't know why they put it there.Maybe someone here knows.I sure is interesting.

I think that you are on to something here Jay....

There was one series of FIXED sight 629's....I wonder if S&W still has the frames in stock....I would be first in line to buy a 658 with a 2 5/8 or 3" barrel. :D

I have a 3" 657 and love it, so a 658 would be a step up for carry use.

Hmmm, must be some pretty tough Grouse up there. You sure you had enough gun? Getting through and through or are you able to find the bullet? What does the expansion look like? Blood trail?;)
 
Timber Wolf...ya gotta remember Combat Driver gets posted to places where people shoot back and things bite...and look at the claws on that sucker....no, unless there was nothing left to eat he used just enough gun....

VG....58s aren't for everyone...you gotta really love and believe in the round...then they make sense....

As I recall, Daddy Warbuck's body guard(Little Orphan Annie), the Asp(?) used a 41 magnum.

If it was good enough for him, I guess it's good enough for me.

Maybe that's where I was first introduced to the 41 magnum?

For some reason, that sticks in my mind til today.

An acquaintance who works in a large gun shop near my home called last week asking if I would be interested in a S&W Model 58 he had on hold. Another gun had come into the shop that he liked more, could not afford both, knew I liked .41s and called me...

Basically NIB...unfired....

The gun my acquaintance took instead was a very rare 629 5"...as in no- standard Magnum profile barrel...not a Classic.

...will join the two Class A engraved 57s in the .41 Collection...

WOW Bob....a NIB 58 is quite a good find....so is a 5" 657....that is one lucky fellow you have for a friend ;)

I was just fixin to have a new gun to find....I know the 657's came in 3", 4", 6", and 8 3/8", but I have never even heard of a 5"....The lone 4" in my collection was hard enough to find....I would like to try out a 5" barrel though...
