This social distancing is a strange thing. It gives one a lot of time to dwell on strange thoughts. Here is one of mine. (mostly for those who are over 50) Remember when all the big mail order stores sent out great big catalogs? As a youngster, I looked at all the toys. A little older and I still looked at toys but also started to look at the guns. A little older and I looked at guns and the ladies unmentionables section. Everything in the big books was just a far away dream. I didn't have any money and girls scared the hell out of me! Now days, I have money to buy most anything I really want. And I have known enough women to be REALLY scared of them. Now I look through my new catalogs and WEB sites to look at the toys I like now. It is just like when I was 12 years old. While I can afford to buy the stuff now, I can't buy any of it! They don't got any of it in stock!!! Strange world and strange times we live in!

Yeah, as my tagline says, been there, done that, got the tshirt.

I miss the Sears catalog and the Wishbook with the toys in it. The 70's were a simpler time.

Yes, I can afford pretty much anything I want, but I don't want or need anything. Not that much is available as GB said.

I have a good woman, after having some awful ones. So good to go there.

And yes, 2020 is a dystopian story come to life.

I got a really good one! My best friend married my wife's best friend! BAD MISTAKE!!! Then there is "Contestant Number Two." He WAS married to my wife's sister. Like he said, I got the better of the sisters!

When we were young, it was "Look but don't touch", Now it is "look but don't want!" And a few are "Look but run away screaming!"

Same-Same. Got the money, got the wants, but refuse to pay the prices being asked. (I too remember the '70's.)
Right now I seem to be into Milsurps (pre WW2) and just can't get my head around the asking prices for the stuff that was pretty much considered "junk" in the '60's and '70's.
(I call it "Old Mans Disease")

Has anybody checked out the latest bunch of imports from Ethiopia?

Remember when those same rifles could be bought for around $100 from Shotgun News in the 70's?

You could get a Colt M16 for less than $700 in the late 70's.

Perhaps it's just me, but now that I'm at an age where, I can afford a FEW SANE toys, there not many I really want or would spend the money for.

Who ever "said life is not always fair," sure the Hell knew what they were talking about.

I remember always wanting or "needing" something back when I was broke (married) and not being able to buy it.

I'm a far ways from being rich as far as money, but I can afford most things I want realistically.

About 95% of the time I see something and think I'd like to have it, then the thought of how hard it was to save up that cash comes to mind.

Well, the catalog I remember,, was the paper "Wish Book" we were sent by Sears, Roebuck,,,

Well ,, Amazon put Sears out of business. NO Wish Book, this year, RIGHT!!?

Wrong, We got a Wish Book in the mail, this week.

The book, full of only toys,, was sent to us by,,, WAIT FOR IT,,,

AMAZON!!

Yep, the internet giant sent us a BIG, snail mail catalog,, to help us get ready for the holidays,,

My wish list is on Amazon, create a list put stuff on it and then family knows what I need.

Lot of gun/hunting stuff on Amazon, wish list Two is on Midway.

Excellent post illustrating a two edged sword. I think a fair number of us here have reached the age that we may have acquired most of our "wants". I know I have and am busy trying to relieve myself of the burden of many of them.

But, having been a bit frugal we have probably accumulated sufficient means to acquire those "must have" items of our younger years but no longer have the desire to to so. My wants in recent years have been international travel and the virus has certainly curtailed that after many wonderful trips and that is a misery to me but certainly minor compared to others suffering so badly. There also seems to be a reluctance to spend hard earned money after years of saving. I have reached a point that my needs are covered and my wants few. A good place to be all things considered. I remember a recent meeting with my financial advisor and he asked me don't you want to buy a boat, fancy car or something like that? Heck no I replied. I figure that the bit I have put aside will either be my nursing home money or be a benefit to my children, hopefully the latter. I have a very comfortable life and absolutely no complaints.
