Never really though about it that way, but the OP is right--computers are the new wish books/catalogs/whatever you want to call them.
Now that I'm definitely older and fortunate enough to afford what ever I want (but too cheap to be be a spendthrift), I'm blessed with just enough common sense not to blow my paychecks on toys or showing off.
I wonder if kids now days even know what spendthrift means?
