They bought a blender. Three weeks later, their cats continue to hold it hostage.

EDIT: WaPo article here
...It arrived on Dec. 16 at their home on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Jessica put the hefty box down on the floor in the kitchen, just for a second. Her 4-year-old tuxedo cat, Max, otherwise known as the "sentient soccer ball," jumped up on the box. Jessica thought it was funny and snapped a photo.

Then Max's 13-year-old feline siblings, George: Destroyer of Worlds ("sentient potato") and Lando Calrissian ("the questionably sentient dust bunny,"), demanded their turn on the knee-high box.

That was three weeks ago. Since then, the cats have refused to leave the box, fighting over who gets to perch upon it and taking turns standing guard while the others eat or are busy elsewhere. The blender remains ensconced inside....

I believe this demonstrates The curious and unpredictable behavior of cats. We have 3 and the could not possibly be more different one from the others.
Different personalities
Different level of playfulness
Different level of affection
Different sleep habits
Different level of curiosity
Different tastes in food and treats.

I have found that I am much happier since I stopped trying to figure them out and just enjoy them, each for his own qualities.

They don't all come with the same wiring harness.

And once again that proverbial nail is hit directly upon it's shiny head.

As I think about it that may be the most definitive one sentence description of a cat I've ever heard.

All I can say is that like most animals some can be trusted and loved and some you don't want to turn your back on. I have been lucky for the last 17 years. Before that...not so much.

They could distract the cats momentarily with something else, take out the blender, and put the box back and the cats would never know the difference.
I can't remember if it was mentioned in the WaPo article but the first I heard about this was in the Bellingham Herald and in that story they said they put out a desperate request on social media for anyone who had old Vitamax boxes they could let the cats have just so they could get their darned blender out and working.

They have created an ongoing event log on FB which my gf accessed and read out to me; we were both crying with laughter. (The FB thread has a lot of "indelicate language" though. I didn't post the BH story here because it had some FB screenshots.)

In the WaPo article they admitted they could probably resolve the situation but were happy to just play along for the entertainment value.

Thanks, arjay! I just spoke with gf-belonging-to-Facebook (who is now ""following" them) and she reported that a delivery man just dropped off a second Vitamix box, which is being investigated by the cats

Also, they reported that the story is the second most-read on Washington Post
