Model S&W500™ HI VIZ(R) Fiber Optic | Smith & Wesson

It lives!

The king daddy (IMO) of badass revolvers lives!

Unfluted, glass bead, chromed switch gear, that evil and awesome looking barrel shroud over 3.5", now not just found in the remarkable .460.

Despite disapproving stares from the wife, I will channel my inner Wayne Campbell. It will be mine.......oh yes.....it will be mine!

I ask myself, "What would I do with a gun like that?" And my answer always comes up, "Nothing."

Quoting from the S&W website: "In 2003 the gunsmiths and engineers at Smith & Wesson wanted to deliver maximum power for serious handgun hunters."

I'm sorry, but I just don't see a revolver with a 3.5-inch barrel as a serious tool for handgun hunters.I used to hunt with a handgun...an Old Model Ruger Super Blackhawk with a 7.5-inch barrel. I was pretty good at it, too. Handgun hunting, alone, is a serious enough challenge for the average hunter. There's no way I'd further limit myself by using a short-barrel revolver, especially one in .500 S&W Magnum caliber.

And for over $1600, I'll pass.

It appears that barrel doesn't feature a muzzle brake. Not too sure I'd be willing to try that one out, the muzzle flip is probably going to border on the extreme with a full power load.

What would I do with a gun like that?

Love it.

Sneak it out at the range when nobody is looking and set off a howitzer percussion. Explode stuff. Watch people ooo and ahhhh at its magnificence. Pass it down through the generations as a value holding heirloom. Satisfy my collector mentality.

....and maybe shoot at a game animal with it one day.

I've spent thousands in the hot rodding world on cars I don't even have anymore. Guns are relatively cheap. Guns of this caliber (pun intended) are well worth the sub $2,000 price. Have you seen the prices of Henry Rifles and custom 1911s these days?

$1,400 (real world internet price not MSRP) is a steal.

S&W may not say so directly, but I bet they know that no one will buy this for hunting. I suspect the same people who like the 4" model will consider this also, as a much more packable version for large bear defense. Also, I am sure they know that their discontinued 2 1/2 inch version is highly sought after on auction websites so there must be a market for it.

But, if they were serious about improving options for highest performance in a half-way packable design, they should have extended it to 4-5 real barrel inches for make better use of the powder and stabilize heavy bullets better (which the compensated 4" version has issues with). Pretty much exactly what John Ross did with S&W for a limited run, see attached photo. I believe he has a few of them left in stock and for less than this 3" model's msrp. Let me know if anyone wants his contact info.

I see a lot of very slightly used S&W 500 for sale on the texasguntrader all the time but not the 460.

Does the novelty wear off quickly or the pain too much to bear, maybe both.

Perfect for any watermelons that decide to give me some backtalk.

"Oh, you have a Ruger Alaskan in .454? What a cute widdle gunnie gun!"

I like both Ruger and Smith and Wesson but the thickness of the forcing cone and the thickness of the top and side straps on the Super RedHawk alone makes it quite competitive over the X frames although the .500 in a 3.5" barrel looks pretty cool. I really like the half lug look on the model 500 with the 6.5" barrel. Smith and Wesson triggers are kindof winning me over.
