BIg snow storm in DC. All non essential employees told to stay home.
Why do we pay them if they're non essential???
I don't know about the rest of you people who run private business, but I don't hire nor do I pay non essential employees.

They say they told 240,000 Govt employees to stay home today.

Must be nothing else to talk about. How many of us been snowed in for a few days of our lifes? Never had fox or cnn shovel their way up to my door to see how I felt about it! Guess I never was too important! I like cages view! If they are non essential how come they have the job, and why are we paying them?

I live in Maryland between Blatimore and DC. The meaning of non-essential is people who don't have emegency essential jobs, like Police, Security, Fire and EMS. Conditions here are very bad, we are under a blizzard warning. This is an area that does not get this amount of snow very often and everything is shut down. I fall into the police part of this and it makes it alot easier if everyone stays home and off the streets. I'm lucky today is my off day but I expect to get called in later. Hope it's warm where you are..

Sir.
I work on one of those gov. installations.
Non essential would be regulatory and compliance folks type of jobs.
Essential would be enforcement and emergency service folks type of jobs.
Lawyers would stay home, fireman and police come to work.
It is easy to draw the line.

Sip,

There are many of us that would start with -

"Unfortunately, the president works at home"

All these non essential workers will be paid for the days off. First-many are on salary. Second-they have to spend all the money that is in the budget for wages and salary. If you don't spend it this year, it will be assumed not to be needed and next year's budget cut by that much. No benefit to trying to save a taxpayer dollar in the system.
Excuse me while I file that 1040.

Well not exactly. I am employed by the goverment, specifically the USDA. I am regulatory and compliance "in plant". If I am not at work the plant cannot operate, so I am essential. There is a lot of other USDA employees, office and such, that are not essential. I get to go out in all the bad weather to get a pay check and the office employees say home and still get theirs. Thats fair isn't it?
