Think I’m gonna get a 640

What about the moon clips makes reliability an issue ? Even if they aren't used? Only curious. I haven't heard that before

The biggest problems with using the clips themselves is that they are very fragile. They can be bent when loading/unloading them, if dropped, even when loading the gun in a hurry. A bent moon clip can tie-up your gun. They are also brass specific. In terms of issues when not using them, the risk of case-under-extractor jams increases and there could be headspacing and reliable ignition concerns.

I honestly don't have a lot of experience myself with moon-clip revolvers, so I'm no subject matter expert, but these were some of the answers I received when asking men like Grant Cunningham, Michael de Bethencourt and Mas Ayoob about them and to me their answers made sense. All recommended avoiding moonclips for defensive purposes. I would give greater credibility to their opinion over that of anonymous posters on Internet gun forums, but that's just me.

I don't know what the likelihood is of experiencing these problems are, but for someone like me who has absolutely no interest in using moonclips, pretty much any increased chance of reliability problems is unacceptable, especially if having to actually pay more money for it.

Stainless and with nothing you don't need, perhaps the best defensive/concealable .38 Special Centennial S&W ever produced.

They make for a good new year! 33 Years I carried "duty sized" revolvers and autos for a living. These snubbies are what works for my old tired back and rotator cuff. I've gone from an FBI OWB draw rig to a AOWB carry and in the summer the AIWB carry. Cuts down on body movement and comfortable while sitting.

I have Pre 40s Pre 42, 640s , 642s 38s and 49s. My favorite EDC is a SS 649. I just like that little extra ability to fire in SA even though in a defensive situation I would likely never use it. Its that mental thing. I own a 649-1 in 357 magnum although I carry it using 38 special. I owned a 640 Pro but sold it. I did not like the rear sight arrangement. I like combat sights in a defensive carry gun. To each their own or if it's not broke don't try to fix it.

Here is a 640-1 with magna port.

I've decided on a standard model 640. I probably wouldn't use the moonclips. I like the standard sights just fine. I'll get it ordered as soon as the snow lets up and I get to town(23 miles away).

Sounds good to me!
Hey Bobby - Are related to the well known Oklahoma Sixkiller family?

Great choice Bobbysixkiller. I am pretty sure your going to love it!!!! Shoot the snot out of it and of course be safe but have fun!!

Another owner of a 640 no dash that's very happy with it. I bought it right after they came out and can't think of anything that would get me to sell it. With proper loads I've never felt the need to move to a 357 version. I also have a 2-1/2" model 66 but always pickup the 640 to carry.

I specifically went to a local show some years ago just to look for a 640 in .38sp. It was amazing but this guy walked by with one that he was trying to sell. I purchased it and then followed him back to his home where I obtained the box etc. It was a really good price as I recall. I took it home, cleaned it up and kept it for a few days. I sold it and made $100 on it. I was not into it at the time. I later purchased an M&P 340 in 38/357 and love it for the lighter weight in the pocket etc. It is not fun to shoot with .357 of any type though. I have been thinking of a 640 Pro lately.

For those of us never satisfied with a 2" barrel and 5 shots check out the new King Cobra from Colt. 3" barrel Cobra, six shot 357. There goes the retirement again.

I like options. The pro gives the option to use moon clips and the option not too. The 3 dot sights are just better than the standard sights especially for a carry gun. I'm befuddled on how they are a liability? You can acquire your sights faster as well as see your sights in a dimly light area. You never know what conditions you'll be in if you'll ever have to use your gun for self defense. Sure the ramped sights are fictional, but they aren't better than a highly visible dot on the front sight IMHO...

Lastly, the 640 Pro does not have the Hilary hole which is the only real liability on the gun. Not only is it unattractive, there have been documented cases of the lock malfunctioning. Sure malfunctions are more of an exception than the rule and chances are that the lock will never malfunction; however, a opportunity still exist that isn't there on the Pro version.
