I am certain this thread has probably been done before but I had some specific questions and comparisons in regard to buying a Shield 9mm for carry.

I currently have a Glock 26 and a Smith and Wesson 642 that split time in a carry mode. The 642 splits time between pocket carry and some OWB carry depending on the weather and the Glock is carried OWB.

I was thinking that I may like (currently not a big fan) IWB carry with the Shield and was looking for some opinions from those that have tried/carried a Shield (IWB or other) versus the above two so that I can get some feedback prior to purchase.

Just looking for general input because I could spend the money on several different things and wanted to get the biggest bang for my buck.

Thanks

It would definitely be worth your while to try one (Rent, borrow, try someone's at the range, etc) to see how you like shooting it before buying.

While I've never shot a 642, I do own a G26 and the Shield Hides very nicely (and easier) IWB... But I pocket pocket carry the Shield, more than IWB carry it.

I carry the Shield IWB in a minimal, all kydex holster. It disappears when positioned right. I struggle with the slight bulge it creates at my belt line when I tuck my shirt in, which is daily for work. I'm probably over thinking it and I'm sure no one notices or at least they don't say if they do. It's a great fun for the money, definitely rent or borrow one first to see how she feels.

As stated above, you really should rent/shoot a gun before you buy one. While renting is not cheap (most ranges charge you for rental, plus you often have to use their ammo, plus range time, you will be looking at approx. $50-$60 to rent a gun), it is still cheaper than buying a gun and deciding that you don't really like shooting it after you have bought it.

As long as you don't overpay for the gun, you can sell it and take much less of a hit than the $50-60 to rent one. I would rather apply the rental fees to a purchase after researching my purchase.

well, my little finger must have touched my track pad_lost what I'd written. I have the G-26 Gen4 and the Shield 9. I've carried both in a Sticky holster ($25) and both do fine. The Shield is a bit thinner and so carries IWB a wee bit easier. For OWB I prefer the Comp-Tac Gladiator. ($96) I've actually used it with a light cover
and the G-26 and Shield rides well. (Have to have one for each pistol) There's a hundred holsters available and choosing one for someone is like choosing a wife for them. These are my choices.
My pistol must be comforting and my holsters have to be comfortable. I too like so many have a "box" with holsters that
flunked my tests. I have a N82 Pro for T-shirt IWB carry. No part of your skin touches the pistol. ($69.95)
I think you'll find the Shield a fine pistol. I consider Glocks the AK47 of handguns___ugly but go bang every time.
Good luck and stay safe.

Wow... $50-$60 to rent?
Most of the ranges I've rented from only charge $5 plus ammo (if you want to shoot a full box... $15-$20 total), or have a "5 for $5" plan (5 shots for $5) and they don't mind if I put another 10 of my own stuff down range.
Plus... If you buy that same day, they minus your rental charge from the purchase.

Of course... Many times, I can find someone who already has what I'm considering and they'll let me try a few mags.
And... I'm not above seeing what others are shooting and asking how they like it. They're usually proud enough to tell me a bit about it and ask if I want to try a mag... and try one of mine in exchange. ;)
There's more ways to try a gun than JUST renting. :)

I have the Glock 27 and the Shield in 9mm. As stated above, the thin Shield is more comfortable for me to carry IWB at the 4:30 position. I shoot the Shield better but that's probably the fact that the Glock is .40 caliber and a bit harder to handle. I am considering a alien gear or crossbreed IWB holster for the shield. From what I've read and been told that would be a great combo for IWB carry. Good Luck.

I own a Ruger LCRX and the Shield 9. I carry both IWB. The Shield in a Treadstone by Overwatch Holsters and the LCRX in a Remora. I prefer the 9 as its thinner overall but carry the LCRX when my attire doesn't lend itself to proper CC. This would be sweat pants, running shorts, etc. I also ankle carry or pocket carry the LCRX, something that, for me, doesn't work with the Shield. That being said, I carry the Shield 80% of the time. It is light on my hip and has more capacity than the LCRX.

I highly recommend the Shield. It virtually disappears in an IWB holster. Very thin, but feels good in the hand. Especially with Talon grips.

I have a Shield. I will probably get flamed for this, but it works and is VERY thin; I use a "Clipdraw" clip, and a Raven Concealment "holster". Very light, very thin, and it disappears. for ME this works well. One thing I've noticed on the shield though (mine, can't say all) is the mag release button is MIM and will rust. I always thought it was poly, mine isn't. Now I just remove and clean / oil once a month. Good luck, if you get one I bet you love it!

I have a Shield 9. It carries well IWB at about 4:30-5:00 right over the back pocket. Mostly comfortable there. Completely invisible. A bit of a stretch to get to. Especially in the car. Any farther around toward 3:00 and it gets more uncomfortable, and bulges too much.
It is also quite comfortable in cross-draw IWB at about 10:30-11:00. Very quick to get to. I do have to take the gun out of the holster when in the car.
The Shield also carries very well OWB at just about any position on the right side. I prefer around 3:00 because it is easier to get hold of. Does require a jacket or thick un-tucked shirt.
I frequently carry the Shield, around the house in my back pocket. Very comfortable and quick there. I have tried the font pocket a few times. Have not had much success that way. The gun sinks down too low, is difficult to remove from the pocket, and prints way too much to take out in public.

Thanks for all the great information!

I have fired one (like it) and have handled a couple that friends of mine have. Mostly curious over the ease of carry and most of the answers seem to be pointing me in that direction. Neither of the people that I know that have one carry IWB so couldn't get much information in that area.

THANKS AGAIN.

The big rumor is that Glock will introduce a single stack 9mm this spring. My shield is getting nervous.

I carried a glock 26 and it was perfect...until I carried the shield and it is very comfortable...since I stopped carrying the 26, I traded it for a gen 4 G 19 for the house and on the occasion I think that I need more firepower.

They say the nines are ok but based on several threads I'd stay away from the 40. They appear to be " Kaboomers".

Seems like the majority of the Kabooms are verified to be ammo related.
And most of the kaboom threads trace back to just a handful (over the last three years) that get re-posted to every single Forum the people can join.

I like my 9. I'm skinny enough to carry it at 3 o clock as long as I have a decent shirt or jacket. I have to carry a g26/7 at 4:30. I bought it because my friend has one and we were shooting milk jugs for fun out at 50 yards and I could shoot it almost as well as a full size pistol.

It will also fit in my pocket if I'm wearing casual jeans or cargo pants. That is how I usually carry it tbh. I flick the safety on and put it in my pocket. I need to get a pocket holster really but I don't carry anything else in that pocket so it is pretty safe.

Also, yeah I've shot a shield 40 once, and I was done. Too snappy. This is coming from a person that shoots a g27 regularly. I can follow up shots with a g27 esp with the 11rd pinky mag but the shield 40 runs wild. Not worth the trade-off and it wearing out more quickly.

I may be biased because of how well mine shot at the range yesterday. I really like it, and while the G26 is a fine gun I find the shield to be a good natural pointer and somehow like the stock trigger on that as much as I like the Apex on my FS M&P. 40
