Thinking of trading in my 9mm Beretta 92FS.

I think that is a wise decision. If you have mixed feelings about about selling/trading it, you should keep it. I don't know your age but at my time of life I have learned there will always be another one and if you really want another one, you will find a way to get it. I also find the difference between the .357 Sig and a hot 9mm to not be worth ditching one to get the other. GatorFarmer is correct. The ammo is a good bit more expensive and harder to get under normal conditions.

That is what originally got my attention. I've noticed there are always a couple of boxes at the local Wal-Mart. I asked my brother-in-law , a police detective, and he said that his department uses 357Sig and he likes it alot. I've also had a bit of accuracy issues with my Beretta. Never enough to do anything about it, but always bugs me a little. Regardless, I think I'll regret it if I sell it.

My theory is that there are fewer users of .357 Sig and that many of those who do use it get their ammunition from their issuing agency, thus they're less prone to stock up. The ammo factories meanwhile have to keep the .357 Sig line in production to fill contracts for those agencies, thus there continues to be some on the shelves.

If you want to get into the hotter offerings that actually will replicate .357 Magnum offerings, you'll want to order some ammunition from Double Tap. I'm not sure how back ordered they are, if at all. Otherwise Ammunition To Go has usually had the 125 gr Gold Dots in stock which is a common offering for agencies that issue .357 Sig.

I think that you can get better results from the Sig ammo than from hotrodding a 9mm. The P229 in particular seems to be durable (albeit a bit on the heavy side). Getting the same velocities from a normal 9mm would probably entail beating the gun up more than I'd wish to do.

Glock 31s are still showing up as PD trade ins at a reasonable price. If you don't mind a Glock, that's going to be the cheapest route to get into a .357 Sig (which Glock calls the .357 Auto...).

I can see where the guys are saying they don't need 2 of something and therefore trading but I don't have duplicates. For me, it's save and buy, there's nothing I can see parting with and from your post, it looks you've decided to do the same.

I learned some time ago don't trade them off, just get what you want! You will regret it. Take the word of a real old timer...trading them off is not good!

Charlie makes a valid point and I generally agree. However, I sold a Berreta 92 some years ago and bought a Sig 226 for duty and never looked back. To me, the Berreta felt like holding a brick wrapped in bubble wrap. The Sig felt like it was custom made for my hand. That being said, the 9 MM is our standard military round so ammo for it is more likely to be available when other calibres are not. With the crowd we have running Washington at this moment, that is a serious consideration.

I have never had any thoughts about selling my 92FS and if I did my wife would probably use it on me. She loves to shoot the 92 and is quite good with it. We have no problem with the size of the gun - both have large hands. I've shot about 8 different brands of ammo in it and have never had a fail to feed or fire.

I have a Taurus PT-92 (basically the same as a Beretta). It's a nice gun and because I don't currently have financial issues, I'll probably keep it. However, I bought a GLOCK 19 and I haven't shot the Taurus since. I'm not promoting the GLOCK, but once you have another gun you like shooting more, there doesn't seem to be a lot of value to keeping the old one. Personally, I shoot the GLOCK more than any other gun just because it's so dang easy to clean. It's my utility gun. Collector or special guns are a different matter.

Personally, if money was tight, I'd sell it.

I think the main point to me is that you said the Beretta was your first handgun. Keep it. I wish I still had my first handgun, and it wasn't anything nice like your 92.

I'm with the trade it crowd...the only way I would not trade the Beretta is if it were a 92 ITALIAN made Inox...no MIM, no plastic, just all steel...

It's not like it's a "rare" collectors item...it's one of how many thousands of 92fs' having been made over the years....

I would do a hand to hand comparison of the 2 pistols and find out which one fit me better and go from there..

The good thing about the Sig is that you can interchange barrels and mags in the 40/357 caliber and have the advantage of being able to spend twice as much on ammo

As far as ammo go's, I haven't found any real bargains out there; it seems the buying/hoarding craze isn't showing too many signs of letting up any time soon so if you want to shoot 357Sig and it makes you happy, just do it.
JMVHO & YMMV!
