thinning the herd,

I collect bourbon.Just got back from a vacation in west Texas visited a bunch of liqour stores. And found some special releases. It seems even though Tn is right next to Ky they send a better variety to Tx.

Have you ever had an opportunity to try the Jack Daniels Silver Select? Not sold in the US, but it can be had in the Duty Free shops. Smooth as water.:D hardcase60

I also collect and enjoy American whiskeys. Rye is too hot for me to enjoy. With my acid reflux anything over 100 proof will probably be too hot for me. I usually have two bottles open and I'll have a couple of fingers during Jeopardy. Right now I have Weller Special Reserve and Maker's Mark open on the side table.

Anything with the name Weller on it is good. Four Roses yellow label is a reasonably priced every day whiskey.

Each November the rare whiskeys are released headed up by the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. Here in MO it is first come, first served. But in Denver my favorite store allocated it based on loyalty points. I had a lot of points! The spirits manager said that even though I've moved that he would take care of me. Since this my last best chance I am going to shoot for Pappy Van Winkle this year.

At first, I thought this was about hair loss? :D

I thought he was selling some guns at a discount to the fine members of this forum. How exactly does one collect bourbon? When you drink it, well...... nothing left but the bottle.:D

Just kidding. My favorite hard likker is sour mash. I don't collect it, I just drink whatever my wife will pay for at Costco.

My collection at the moment contains a bottle of 17 year old Wild Turkey Master's Keep, Eagle Rare, Maker's Mark, Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Select and my old stand by George Dickel Barrel Select. I drink it just as God made it, straight, just pour it in my favorite glass.

At around $35 a bottle try some George Dickel Barrel Select if you can find it. Smmmmoooooth as silk.

Tim Hardin

Good recording ,Whiskey, whiskey by Tim Hardin. At one time at hunting camp Someone put a bottle of Jeremiah Weed bourbon in front of me. Most terrible thing I've ever tasted next to buttermilk. Now good bourbon cut with proper Ginger Ale is pleasing to me. On the rocks will do in a pinch. Crown Royal usage may be reason for another thread. Do not imbibe while reloading, nor reload while inbibing

Back in the early 2000s, some buddies went to FL for speed week. As they drove past, they stopped at what was then Cork'n Bottle. The one guy went in and said he wanted a bottle of the best Bourbon they had. The guy said its expensive at $54.95 a bottle. So he cast caution to the wind and picked up a bottle of A H Hirsch. So they drove on. Got a motel room with a view of water. They figured a bottle would last them all week. It didn't last the night. So they spent the next day trying to find another bottle. They couldn't even find anyone who'd heard of it. So they called me. I went down to the place and they'd already raised the price to $59.95. So I asked the guy how I could get last weeks price. He said "buy a full case." So I did.

They came home and wanted 4 bottles. I sold a bottle at the gun show, then gave one to my table partner, and another to Charlie Sherrill. Charlie and his sister drank that bottle in one night, too. He later found some in Nawleens. But it was priced in the hundreds. Anyway, I had 4 bottles left. So I opened one and we set about drinking it. Still got 4" left. The other 3 are still full. Last price I saw on the internet was retail of $1500 per bottle. Its rated as the best bourbon anyone has ever made.

My gun show partner had a bottle of RVW. It was the 20 year and he got it back in 1998. He brought it to a gun show to sell to a knife guy. He wanted $400 for it, but the knife guy only would go $200. So I bought it quick before anyone could change their minds.

And its not a collection. Its called a whisky library. I've found all sorts of good stuff to add in. I've got a bottle of Tin Cup. And a bottle of 5 Wives from Utah (vodka). Mostly I don't drink it or even open it. Well, some maybe, but don't tell.

For fun, go to whiskey.com

There was a time when all the help at I-75 Cork'n Bottle knew my name.

The family that owned it was named "Hue". The one guy drove a Ferrari on nice, sunny days. Now they've got a "bar" just inside the doors. It sells premium whisky. Like Pappy and Hirsch. Some of its priced up at $7000 a bottle. I'm guessing they don't sell much of it.

I don't drink any more but......

......throughout the years I think the worst tasting stuff I've had was "Old Grand Dad". Looking at the reviews they say it's good stuff. Maybe I got a bad batch or something.

PS I always wondered what 'Old Crow' tasted like.

Guess i'm a heathen. Jack daniel's Black Label every night while reading "New Posts" and smokin' Backwoods cigars. LOL.
Just a touch of good water in a big tumbler of jack.
Have to disagree on the Jim Beam. Was the cheapest in the Class-Six store at Camp Courtney On Okinawa in the 70s. Could only afford that. I will never drink it again. It worked, but was not good on MY palate.
YMMV.
I LOVE this forum!

Bookers and Basil Hayden for me. I'm trying to find a deal at Costco as the holidays approach. Yes sir! It doesn't get better than a glass of good bourbon and a fine cigar... life is good.

Jim Beam was the de facto standard..

Back in the day, we drank a lot of Jim Beam, but I guess we weren't drinking it for flavor. As I got older I thought that Jim Beam was the SWEETEST Bourbon out there. I didn't think that bourbon was supposed to taste 'sweet'. I quit with it after that.

No matter. I haven't had anything to drink in 15 years.

Didya know they bottle it in all sizes, including airline mini bottles. Around here sold at all the liquor stores. I used to have a collection of them, but then I had sons go thru their teen years. I don't know the mechanics of it, but it seems shrinkage is a form of evaporation. One day there are a hundred of them, then 99 and on down. I had one bottle of Seagram's VO from the early 70s. One day it was gone. As Shugart would say "I didn do nuffin or see nuffin."

Since this is one of my favorite subjects I had to revisit this thread. I just did a count and I have 22 bottles of various juices. That will go down by one tonight when I polish off a bottle of Makers.

About 15 years ago a friend gave me a bottle of Old Rip Van Winkle. I carried it around the world with me saving it for the night I retired. Well that friend's wife was losing her fight with cancer and I decided to keep it to share with him and to toast her. She has passed and I am waiting for the service to meet up with him.

The most expensive I ever bought was Jefferson Presidential Reserve Rye for $141. It rarely comes out but it is exceptional.

I've made several good friends through a shared passion for whiskey. No reason to stop now.

My tastes in bourbon/whiskey remain modest - I have always liked Black Jack along with Three Feathers and Old Log Cabin. The supposed "good stuff" is wasted on me. I am the same way with sushi. Must be the middle class upbringing.
