Here's the Spitfire in action. They admit it's short range, that made the longer-ranged Mustang the No. 1 choice in the series of these videos.
For what it's worth, Capt. Eric Brown, RN, flew about all Allied and Axis fighters, as a test pilot. He also saw combat over France in Spitfires.
He said in a book that he thought the MK XIV Spitfire was the plane he'd want to be in, to take on any comer of that day. But he also admired the Mustang.
Also said that the FW-190 was a very deadly opponent, superior to the Spitfire "in the vertical". But the Spit had the advantage in horizontal battle, thanks to its very tight turns. The FW-190 could climb, roll, and dive better, in most marks. It was surely a frightening opponent, if the pilot was good. It scared the British badly in the spring of 1941, being better than the Spitfire MK V. The MK IX was rushed into production to give RAF pilots a machine that could climb and dive on par with the 190's.
