My 6 inch model 28-2 came with magnas.
My 3-1/2 inch model 27-2 came with targets.
I find both type of stocks comfortable to shoot with.
But I think the targets fit better in a longer barrel. And I think they are bit "too much" in a 3-1/2.
So, I swaped them.
It pleases me. What about you?
I like it better than the original setup, but in general, I don't like Magnas at all. Too small, too odd looking on a gun the size of an N-Frame. All three of my 28-2's came with them, and all three have or will be changed, with the matching magnas kept for resale. I have Altamont target grips on two of my 28's and a set of not so great looking S&W targets that I'm going to see if I can get a friend to refinish when he's putting the finishing touches on a table he is making for his wife. I have a set of ruber Pach's that's going on in the meantime. Ugly, but functional.

That's a big reason I don't like the magnas much, just too little. Every N frame gun I've ever had came with a pair of them in the box or on the gun.
My hands aren't that big, I'm no Hickok 45 for sure, but I seem to like larger grips in general, and I don't want really sharp checkering on them. The "cheese grater" targets on my long gone 66 (I think it was) were awful. Looked nice though. They came off and a set of some well worn targets went on. Most of the wear was there wasn't much checkering left.

I have fairly large hands, and usually prefer target stocks because they keep the gun higher in my grip and the sights line up better. That said, I like magnas on shorter barreled guns and I don't generally change out magnas for targets.
I'm no Hickock45 either, just 6 feet tall.

I don't want them to be slippery, but there is a point of where I consider it to be over the top. Back when I had that 66, my hands were very rough, and I still hated them. If I was to make a perfect grip for myself, there would be some light checkering on it, with grooves for my hands to sink into. But on a poly gun, these are the killer grips, IMHO, hard to think of a way to improve them:

Well I like the magnas. Shoot well with them too. I even like the old service stocks.

I shoot my M58 quite well with the Magnas that came on it.
They are unique to the M58 and M520.
I really don't care for aftermarket grips except for a set Pachmayr I have for my M28-2 that I used for hunting and a set of Hogue Monogrips that came on my brother's M66-1 service revolver . I don't mind switching grips around on my guns as long as they are not numbered to the gun.
My new M&P 45 Shield M2.0 arrived yesterday. It has cheese grader grips from he!! on it.

N-frame magna's work for me. I tried targets on both a 6" and 4" Highway Patrolman and they were just too big. Specifically, the base is too large. Now, on my 29-2 and my 25-2 I just can't bring myself to take the original target stocks off.
My hands aren't that big and a boxer's fracture on my shooting hand has left my pinky finger a tad short. So that doesn't help matters. But I won't hesitate to put a BK adapter on a magna, either N or K frame. And I do like K targets on my 14-4 and my K22.

Hand sizes and individual tastes vary considerably. For the last fifty years, Magnas have looked better and felt more comfortable to me, regardless of frame size or barrel length.

I like stainless over blue, and not much of a N frame fan.
BUT...I'd love to have a 3 1/2" 27-2!

I've shot a friend's M&P and the grip texture isn't nearly as "graterish" as the old ones they were putting on K & L frames about 40 years or so ago. The M&P grips are, IMHO, a little over the top, but not horrible. Worst one I can remember is a Glock that someone had gone crazy with a soldering iron on. Just ridiculous. The guy who owned and did the grips seemed shocked that a friend and I both thought he basically trashed the gun.
What do you do to a gun with a soldering iron? I know one thing, it does not sound good

Found the same with my 24-3 and custom built .44 Special.
Magna's on the 3 1/2" are more comfortable for gripping and for shooting. I pretty much stick with moderate loads in the short barrel.
The 24-3, on occasion get hotter loads and the uncheckered targets smooth out the ride.

I will have to admit that all the .45 semi autos I own are of the 1911 pattern.
Only one of them a "true" 1911 though, and even that one is a 1911A1.
They are not carry guns. 2 of them are used in competition. The other one, even if registered in the "sporting permit" is not used in competition anymore.
So we have an STI Spartan; a series 80 Gold Cup as backup and a battered. mixed parts USGI.
