This is not a drill!: S&W 4586's at Bud's for $259 delivered!!!

Picked mine up today. My initial evaluation was that this gun was used frequently and never cleaned. In fact, it look like there was rust in a few vital areas.

To make a long story short, I took the gun apart (Including the grips. Not fun to take off or reassemble by the way) and soaked everything in CLP for a few hours. Everything that looked like rust was just caked on grease and carbon build-up. I would say that the previous operator of this gun never took it apart to clean. They just reapplied grease when needed. In fact, other than holster wear and sights that are south of worthless, it's looking pretty good right now.

I think she's a shooter. I'll find out for sure tomorrow when I take it to the range.

Anyone compare the Hogue grip to the S&W grip? I think I will try the Hogue.

Two differences I notice are the attachment. S&W uses a pin at lower rear, Hogue uses two grip screws. The S&W grip is straight down the back strap while the Hogues have a curved palm swell. The Hogue is more comfortable for me and is sticky. I picked up a new set of Hogues on fleabay for $20. Midway sells both brands for $19 less shipping.

Well it looks like I missed out on another great deal. But I'd still like to know what is the difference between the S&W 4586 and the S&W 4553TSW? Could somebody enlighten me?

Thanks,

Snowdoggie

4553TSW (Tactical Smith & Wesson)

alloy frame, stainless slide, DA only with 7 round magazine, 3.75 barrel and semi-bobbed hammer

4586
DA only, stainless frame and slide, 4.25 inch barrel, 8 round magazine, same hammer and smooth trigger.

This is from SCSW 3, I didn't know either. I hope it helps.

Shot mine today. Sights are off, gun shoots low.
DAO trigger wasn't too bad, took a few shots to get used to after shooting 50 rounds through the 22/45 first.

The night sights aren't dead as I first suspected, but they are dim.
If anyone confirms they can be "recharged", then I may decide to go that route.

Sounds like I got lucky and got one of the better picks of the litter.
Mine has no rust or pitting, internals looked like it had been shot very little or cleaned well, or both.
The only mark on the slide is a little holster wear in front of the ejection port.
Otherwise frame and slide are near immaculate.

Both mags are also in great shape, no sign of rust or pitting on either one.

Again, very pleased with the gun and glad I jumped in on this deal early on.

I hope to get some pics taken and posted in the next day or two, been a busy week.

Sanded and polished out the rust pits. No more logo or Smith & Wesson on the slide either. I left the flats forward of the serrations polished and bead blasted the rest of the slide.

Stock S&W grip removal is detailed in this link below. Be careful with the sideplate assembly , part number 1 in the S&W diagram, when reinstalling the grip. The forked end that the pin drives through can get bent fairly easy, then the pin won't keep the forked end down, and you end up replacing the 10.00 part.

To me, it's the worse part of the design of the 3rd generation autos. What were they thinking? Driving a pin out to remove a grip?, be careful and don't bend this?, mainspring is held by the grip?, etc. The rest of the 3rd generation design is excellent, IMO.

How to replace the S&W 5906 grip - Glock Talk

I hit on it a little while after I posted the question. Talk about overkill and overly complicated design! It has to be the most complicated grip retention system I've ever seen on any gun. I think I'm going to end up changing to Houge grips on my 5906 for sure, and keep the factory ones in the box in case I sell the gun someday. The 4568 will probably keep the originals, as they are in great shape anyway.

I was in Buds yesterday and they had 3 of the 4553TSW's still on the shelf at $325.

You will probably have to call and tell them what you want, as I don't see any on their site.

I didn't take them out of the case, but from casual view they all looked good.

You guys that got them in the original box, with paperwork, fired brass, etc. made out like bandits. This one above looks almost new. Even the grips look great. This looks like a gun that spent most of its life sitting in their vault. I don't see any holster wear. I hate you by the way..:D........jealousy, it's a terrible thang.

I would be happy just to get mine. I ordered mine last Saturday and mailed a money order Monday. They still don't have my money order and the 7 day hold is up today. They will release it back to stock. Darn Post Office:mad:. They wanted $18 to overnight and I thought I had plenty of time:mad::mad:. I emailed Buds and assured them the $$ was on the way. I hope they give me a couple more days.

If you are looking for a inexpensive holster, the Crossman nylon holster at Walmart for $6 is a perfect fit for the 4586 and even has a spare mag pocket. You can't beat the price.

Ditto what ALDE said, mailed (priority) my dealers FFL copy and check on 7/16 and Bud's still hadn't gotten it today, 7/24! Great service by the USPO. Derek at Bud's has been great and said he would continue to hold my pistol and look for the check and FFL. If these 45s are half what my old 1076 was then we all got great deals. Its a shame SW quit making the 3rd gen autos to compete with the Glocks/Sigs, etc., 'cause they're (the SW) are much better quality weapons IMHO.

ko: Yours turned out very well, nice job!
gr8: Yours looks brand new. These things really run the condition gamut.

I got to visit my two yesterday. Both were quite rough and looked like they'd been thrown into a large box full of pistols and shaken around.

The night sights on the 4553TSW glowed but were dim while the 4586TSWs were very bright. 4553 has the 2 line model/serial number while the 4586 has the 3 line model/serial number.

The Spec. Ord. # on the box is 7207 and the box is the newest style available so the pistol isn't very old at all. Serial numbers start with BEM on the 4586 and VJD on the 4553.

My dealer will be shipping them home on Monday to hopefully get prettied up a bit. I didn't have a chance to get any photos for a before and after comparison but hopefully I'll be able to share some after photos soon.

I talked to the lady at the post office and she said it was slow because of the recent flooding in TN. She told me Priority Mail would probably be the same as First Class and get there Thursday and the $18 Next Day would be Wednesday. I have been in contact with Derek too and he has been great. This is my first purchase from Bud's but it won't be my last.

I bet we are both notified that they are shipping Monday. At least we can hope;).

gr8AmericanBash- Wow, yours looks great! I wish mine was even remotely in the shape yours is! It shot great though, and had zero issues. We put up a target at about 32 feet (There's a handy stump there) and it was hitting dead on center. The DAO thing is odd to me still. All in all, I'm very happy. I just kind of wished I had gotten a box and stuff...sniff!

Of all the times I chose to take a month away from the forum (ok, the OB and the little lady and the newest little lady dictated me being away) and I see this great deal ya'll got. I'm getting back into security work and was thinking it might be good to have a 4586 as I liked the first one I had.

I'm depressed and going to bed :p

I received my 4586 this week. Looks to be in pretty good shape with just some holster wear. Haven't shot it yet or stripped it down (way too busy at work). I did clean the mags. No scratches or nicks. First time I have bought a firearm sight unseen. FFL here charged me $45. No case or papers.

I've been working with 400 and 2000 grit paper, and I think mine is going to look pretty good. Of course, I lost the S&W and the logo on the slide. NS's are decent.

BTW, I called S&W for a build date and they said 2004. This confuses me because I didn't think the 4586 was in production that late. At lease it explains why the NS's work.
