This old CM...

I found it at the local gunshop, with horrid rubber (I think hogue) grips on it and almost didn't give it a second glance. But I took it home and removed the offending rubber. Unfortunately the original grips are lost to time... So I quickly bought current grips and dug up my old Tylers and took a few snaps a few years ago when I bought it. Now I am curious about it's age (like everyone else is when they buy something old I guess) and if there is somewhere I can get more 'correct' looking wood (yea, I know the originals were serial-matched to the gun). I have since put Ahrends target grips on it but I think I want Smith wood. The serial is K 1582XX, and I was told it was a '52 when I bought it.

I was talking to one of my ex-cop gun nut buddies. He is no collector but carried a CM quite often and has much respect of the model. We both commented, not only would we both like one, but also that they are rare as hen's teeth in Central Oregon. I visit as many gunstores as possible, with an eye especially for S&W's. I have never seen one for sale in the flesh. It seems when people get them, they never get rid of em. Nice gun, good job.

Welcome to the forum!

Sweet!

1952 is correct, at least for the date it was serialized. You do need the correct vintage wood on it now.

That's a good looking CM. They are semi-hard to find in California, too. I know I wouldn't sell mine.

If you can find K-magnas numbered between 50000 and 250000, they should fit your gun pretty well (and maybe perfectly), the design will be right, and they won't be more than a couple of years away from the true assembly chronology. There's nothing magic about those round numbers. Any K-frame diamond magnas should work, but if you stumble into a low-number five-digit pair they probably have sharper shoulders than would have been original on your gun; if you find diamond magnas with a later number, the shoulders would be more rounded than the ones that were original on your gun.

Nice find! Correct grips should not be too hard to find, thats a great looking CM. One of those is on my short list as I've never even seen one for sale around here.
