THIS POST STINKS!!

The public restroom thing is one of the main reasons I will not CC with an open topped holster unless it has a thumb snap. Not just any thumb snap, but one that takes a little effort to pop loose. Lots of thumb snaps open too easily.

My carry piece is the first thing placed in a safe location, before dropping trou. Then the phone. The handgun usually goes on the top of the tank, and the phone usually goes on top of the paper dispenser. (if available that is) Sometime the call comes when the public john is just a seat, or a porta-potty. But the gun is always secured first and foremost.

I've always had the fear of getting distracted and leaving either one behind, but so far so good. I dearly love have the "home court" advantage though, but as Forest Gump said "It happens."

Glad you didn't drop a good gun. LOL!

I have tried to teach young officers that if you are sitting down to do your business. And not wearing a removable gunbelt. You should put your handgun either in pants pocket or in your pants between your legs.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

That is the correct way to retain your sidearm while doing your business.

tlay - you have already been beat up here about this incident - but I gots to add my 2-cents ;) It doesn't appear that you work as an LEO - so I would have been sorely tempted to leave my HG secured in the car if I had to use the powder room. There may be some here, maybe even you, who will say I never want to be un-armed. I can understand and appreciate that - but I would then be tempted to find a safer location to do my 'business' ;) in that case ...

Be lucky you were not in a outhouse or port-o-potty!:D

I am not sure I would honey-dipper dive for a Registered Magnum, much less a Glock!

I would be throwing all of my money down there along with my cell phone, my knife, my wallet and mywatch, etc. Why? Because I'm not going in there just for the gun. I'm making it worth my while and much more justifiable.

A couple cycles through the ultra sonic cleaner hosed down with Lysol in between a final ultra sonic then Ballistol.
Sheesh! It's a Glock. Not like it's a "good" gun;)

Place it on top of the toilet paper dispenser, or alongside the edge of the bottom of the ceramic part of the toilet.
Me, I'm usually wearing shorts so that is where I place it.

Because I'm washing my hands when I'm done, I'll wash them after washing the Glock too. No big deal.

You do wash you hands afterwards, right?

When I worked in DC, one of the security guards in the building put a round into the floor of the 5th floor bathroom while doing his business. He was unemployed about 5 minutes later.

I just cleared my Glock 26, put it back in its open-top'd RCS AIWB holster, turned it upside-down, and shook it as hard as I could.

Miraculously, it didn't fall out!

Well, not really a miracle...what I did was, I bought a holster with adjustable retention, and when I got it, increased the tension until the gun didn't fall out when I shook it like a British nanny.

There's nothing wrong with open-top'd holsters, either of the adjustable-retention or super-sekret draw-stroke designs, so long as they're decent.

I just want to add a few things. First, this is not my first rodeo. I am in my 60s and have been concealed carrying longer than a lot of you are old! I like leather! This particular Dillon holster does not have a retention adjusting screw.
Next is my normal routine for bathroom visits is to lay the gun and holster in my pants, when I pick it up I grab the gun, holster and pants away from the toilet. But I lost my balance and had to either fall or drop my hand from the gun, I am disabled.
Lastly I didn't tell you this to be the butt end, pun intended, of a joke, I am an NRA instructor and thought this was something that a lot of new carriers might want to think about.
My normal carry is a S&W shield 9mm, the infamous Glock, or a S&W model 19 snub.
