SOme observations from where I sit.
Being placed in prison IS the punishment-the feds realize this but many at the state level do not and that is where a lot of problems creep in.
The lock them up mentality has led to the proliferation of prisons and it's cheaper to build them with 24 man (or however many) pods than individual or two man cells. Riot waiting to happen.
Food is a pacifier. Feed them decently and it gives them something to look forward to in an otherwise intolerable existence.
Cable TV GIVES THEM SOMETHING TO DO all day other than fight f*** and plor mayhem. It also is something to take away as a discipline issue.
Prisons are powder kegs and the guards for the most part want to keep it at simmer rather than let it boil over.
I've been in a lot of jails and to tell you the trugh, a month in any one of tem for a rookie would do some serious mental harm. Definately no place to be.
Huddled up in the corner while the inmates take turn urinating on you because you got 30 days for a non support rap is pretty stiff if you ask me.
They do have plenty to do and without having to have cable TV. All the below are daily and nightly activities they can choose to participate in.
They get three--one hour of rec yard time daily--if they so choose to do so?
They get aone or two hour visit to the Law Library daily if they so choose to do so?
Most have jobs to do--such as: Wardens boy--office boy,Admin buiding and other buildings maintenance, inside yard squad, outside yard squad,fieldforce:::these are the ones who go outside and rais pigs, horses, grow crops etc:::::::::and are guarded by a Sergean ton horse--as well as four others on horse--inluding one with scoped rifle.
Some are detailed as: electricians, welders, carpenters, cooks, servers, gardeners, etc etc etc.
On top of this stuff--they can check games out of the pod picket located in the midst of their four fifty man pods. This can go on from between six am to ten pm===on the games and such. Also, they have daily and nightly two hour Church services which are held in the gym or one of the chow halls.
They also have various casses to go to as well. These start at six am and can go till nine pm.
What more can they need? They get Commissary daily except for Sundays. They also dont have to work on Sundays in any cap--unless of an emergency.
They alsohave monthly various sportings events/competitions.These include:Chess,Basketball,Baseball, Football,Croquet and I forge what else?
Nobody can tell me that they arent kept busy. In addition,as I forgot to mention it earlier--they aso have regular library--for checking books out. That is a one hour daily thing--if they so choose to do so?
Then you have those who earned special priviledges. I will not go into that because id be here all day explaining things.
