Thoughts on "automatic" knives

About ten years ago I bought a little bitty one, a California legal knife from Pro-tech. I find it fun as a knickknack, and occasionally carry it.

On the whole, though, I prefer the look of the traditional slip-joint pocketknives.

I do see the one-hand value of an auto or assisted opening knife for first responders as in Faulkner’s story above. And I have found the one handed operation of the Leatherman Wave useful while working on something that requires one hand to keep it steady or in place while the other is deploying a blade or the pliers.

I’m enjoying the image of Pawngal at her fund raising dinners when she pulls out her auto — click! — and starts in on her rubber chicken. I bet her fellow diners don’t pick many arguments with her!:)

for people in "questionable law states"
google Linder dual action knife... just a folder unless you know where the hidden button is... kinda cool...

I have a small collection of gen 1 Spyderco Delica’s/Endura’s that meets all my perceived needs and has for a long time. I just don’t see any practical reason to change.

Others will come to different conclusions. Pick what you determine is best for you or what you want.

My only thought about them is that they are illegal in my state, so...

Fortunately "spring assisted opening" knives aren't - so I carry one of those instead.

I love the quality-built antique autos. The silver scales on some and silver bolsters combined with the silky smooth release of the action are a plus. Older, German and Italian built stuff is nirvana for me.

Would love to see some photos, and learn some background, on “older German and Italian built stuff.” Bet I’m not the only one here!

I have several autos, been collecting them for a couple decades. I just like them. My EDC is a Microtech Lightfoot, which I have carried daily for 18 years. It is big, heavy, and tough. I cut everything with it. It is a really good tool.
I started using it because the "button" is not a button it is a portion of the handle that if you know how to hold the knife and move the hidden release it opens. also it has very prominent thumb studs you can use to open it without the spring.
In other words it is just a knife unless you know about it and have practiced with it.
So it was my daily before it became legal.
I have a condition that is slowly destroying my hands and an auto is at this point almost a necessity.
to me it is just a tool, a knife, for defense I carry a gun.
