Thoughts on the M&P 40/9 compact (3.5") for carry

I carry a compact every day. (OWB). I've shot a Shield a number of times (prop guns in various matches) and I even rented one once to see if I liked it. I didn't like the size, just felt too small and snappy, if I wanted small and snappy, I'd carry my LCP which I can put in a shirt pocket:eek:. I'm retired so I don't have any particular dress code, consequently concealment is not an issue. :D

My 9c is my "go to" choice 99% of the time. It's with me every day in a Crossbreed, it's on the nightstand with a full-size mag, and it gets used on the weekends in IDPA matches when I get to shoot BUG stages. I've tried the Shield several times and the Compact just feels better to me.

Tried a shield when they came out and see a lot of positives due to it's size. but the width was too thin for my hand.

I usually carry a double stack .45 strong side iwb. For my build, I find the double stack 45s are able, but are slightly larger than I want when I need to go somewhere and have to tuck in my shirt.

When I need to tuck in my shirt, my preference is continue carrying a double stack over a single stack, so I grab the M&P40c.

With the radius of the grip and overall height (4.3") with the flat mag floor plate installed it does a good job of not printing without having to look disheveled from over-blousing my shirt to keep from printing.

If I had to pick just one, either the M&P9c or 40c would make an excellent choice for the everyday carry role and would transition well to the home defense role with just a magazine swap. Since they are the same physical size, it's a matter of caliber preference as far as which of the two models to pick.

So here I am, the last day for the coupon and after handling (not shooting) the shield and the compact, I'm pretty much settled on getting a Compact for most of the reasons in this thread. I had already had many of the same views/thoughts so getting them reenforced helped the process.

Big C has both the 9 and 40 Compact in stock. As I've said, I own both a 9 Pro 5" and a 40 4.25"

I'm leaning to the 9 right now with the winning criteria of 12 versus 10 rounds in the same package and possibly less perceived recoil with the shorter grip in play.

Probably way over thinking this but I'm also beginning to second guess the real benefit of adding a 3.5" when I have the 4.5" ;)

I'll be leaving the house in about an hour with a nice drive (45 minutes) ahead as the Big C with the stock is not my closest one!!!! If this is the toughest thing I need to struggle with today, I'm a lucky man!

got it made. I ordered my 9c from buds. Not so patiently waiting for it to come to my FFL

9C in the stable! And because some have bashed customer service recently....... I misread the coupon and it expired yesterday. I went to purchase my new "pal" and the clerk said, "this is expired but let me talk to my manager, I know I've sold you a number of items". 5 minutes later I had everything squared away, including the coupon.

OUTSTANDING customer service!!!

The 9c is an awesome gun. It's one of my two EDC (the other is an LCR). The 9c requires a good holster and belt. It's not super heavy or big. But it's big enough that it needs the right holster. I use a Old Faithful hybrid.

I bought my 9c with the intention of carrying it before I had my CCW. Then the Shield came out and I couldn't resist buying one. I've been carrying the Shield for a few months in a Rubicon Tactical IWB kydex and I honestly can't even tell it's there. I plan to carry the 9c OWB once the weather turns cold again and will definitely buy another rig from Rubicon when the time comes.
