Three kinds of whiskey in my household...

After living more than 83 years on this planet, I finally have my liquor cabinet properly arranged.

There are 3 kinds of whiskey in it.

First: Rebel Yell Bourbon. My personal pick for a premium Bourbon, made in Kentucky the same way for generations. When I want a shot of the finest, it will be in a highball glass, poured gently over a few ice cubes. Then, do not disturb me in any way and risk my ire. I will pour it for guests who are truly my friends and who have earned the best.

Second, Jim Beam Bourbon. Also made pretty much the same way in Kentucky for a long time. It is not as fine as Rebel Yell, but it makes a great Bourbon for mixed drinks. This is the prime ingredient in my signature concoction, a Manhattan. It has another virtue, as it is relatively inexpensive to acquire. My wife enjoys it mixed with Ginger Ale - never 7-up.

And finally, Jack Daniel's. I'm not being sacrilegious; in spite of the fact that it's made in Tennessee, it's a very smooth drink - Jack and water over a few ice cubes is easy, quick to fix and very soothing to sit back with after a long hard day, or even if the day wasn't all that hard. One of my co-workers many years ago favored it for that purpose and now I fully agree with her.

Don't ever insult me by saying something like "...but what about Scotch?" Scotch is an evil concoction that is unfit for human consumption. My mind is made up. I will not even have it around to favor former friends who desire it by preference.

As a counterpoint, I find vodka great on the rocks with an olive or two, or when fixing a bloody Mary or one of those drinks that includes orange juice, which for some inexplicable reason is called a screwdriver.

Don't get me started on beer - I'm very happy with Heineken and I do buy Dos Equis for the wife - I'll even drink it if we are out of Heineken...

Some may say my tastes are simple or rooted in tradition. That's true, and that's my preference!

Too each his or her own, and I'll even drink to that - with my own preferred liquors!

Best to all,

John

My wife bought me a bottle of Peyton Manning's Sweetens Cove. 56.48% ALC By Vol. I think they are lying because it is the smoothest Tennessee Bourbon Whiskey (yeah I know KY) I have ever tasted. It's also about the price of half a case of JD for a single bottle.

Other than that I like Sagamore Spirit, Makers, Knob, well heck any and all of the browns I guess.

Jim Beam Black is my preferred bourbon. And I have to agree with you on the scotch. Never tasted one I liked. Rye is my alternative when out of JBB.

Having grown up the grandson of a confirmed bourbon drinker from Kentucky, my first experiences with whiskey were sneaking sips of his Early Times on the rocks. My father, when he did drink, drank McNaughton's Canadian. I started where alot of people did. Square bottle with a black and white label. Old No.7 on the front. But then I wasn't enjoying the whiskey, I was getting hammered. There's a difference. I moved away from whiskey for awhile and branched out into vodka and rum. And some very interesting nights exploring the intricacies of cheap tequila. When the bourbon resurgence hit with the single barrel stuff, I went back to whiskey and began to enjoy the experience, rather than chug it for effect. Got a bottle of Booker's that I use to toast my grandfather every year at Christmas. Besides the Booker's, I have a bottle of Pendleton for everyday and friends, and a bottle of Redbreast 15 year old Irish for when I'm feeling high and mighty. But the last bottle of alcohol I bought was a pint of Clear Springs 190. It goes in my backpack. Stove fuel, cleaner, medicine, fire starter and conversation starter, it's very versatile.:D

Heineken is also my preferred day-to-day kind of beer. However, I have never acquired the taste for bourbon. Don't know why, nothing against it, it just doesn't sit well with my palette. My preferred whiskeys are generally from Ireland with Red Breast being the cream of the crop, but Tullamore D.E.W. is a moderately priced Irish whiskey that I also enjoy more often because of price.

As said before, drink what you like!

I forgot to mention Stanahan's single malt whiskey made here in Colorado. Priced like Scotch but very good.

Wild Turkey 101 all day everyday. Best gift I ever got was when my wife got us a tour through distillery. For a cheap mixer bourbon I’ve been buying a lot of Jeffers Creek lately. Large liquor store chain here sells it for $16.99 with rewards card. It’s even good on ice all by itself.

I like a little Irish whiskey on occasion, Bushmills on the rocks is my usual choice.
Bourbon and Scotch are good too, tried Rye a couple of times and didn't care much for it.

My booze

My maternal grandad drank in generous quantities any beverage that contained alcohol, that he could obtain or make, all of his lifetime. I never saw him drunk. He only lived to the age of 97. I believe he’d have lived to be an old man if he hadn’t been a heavy drinker.

It's my candid opinion; Booze has one purpose only, to alter your mood.

Some booze is mellower than others, and some booze has different alcohol ratings. It’s up to the discretion of the drinker, to determine the type, and control its use.

There are several types of mild booze in my Wine / liquor cupboard, and when I want a little more kick in my joyjuice, I drink a little Wild Turkey 101.

By choice, none of my booze is extravagantly expensive.

I do like Proper #12 as an everyday Irish whiskey.

For Christmas and my birthday my sister will give me a bottle of Bushmills Black Bush. That is the good stuff IMHO.

I do like Buffalo Trace. It's had to find here in PA, but I thinks it's good for the price point. If it's available, I'll buy a bottle.

Beer - Bud (not Bud Light, don't like it), IC Light, Miller High Life, or Miller Lite are my go to's. Others like craft beers, and that's perfectly fine. Just not my cuppa.
