Three S&W "Classics"

Below is a picture of three classic S&W revolvers. From the top they are:

a. Model 625-5 Classic, SDS14XX, in 45 Colt, with a 5" barrel.
b. Model 629-4 Classic, CBA79XX, in 44 Magnum, with a 5" barrel.
c. Model 27-2, N343XX (1969-72), with a 5" barrel, converted by Bowen to 44 Special.

I've fitted them all with Nill Classic grips and at least for me the Classic grips seem to fit the guns the best in terms of looks and function. The second picture below is the same Model 27-2 but with its original custom fit Spegel Extended Boot grips. After much thought, the Nill Classics "fit" this gun much better.

What do you all think?

I took the 625 Classic to the range today and shot my standard 45 Colt load: 255 grain lead round nose flat point over 8.5 grains of Unique. It's my do everything load and in most of my 45 Colt guns has performed very well. The 625 Classic appeared to like it shooting a 2-3" group from the bench at 25 yards. But what surprised me the most was how well the Nill Classic grips handled the recoil. That load is fairly stout, but the Nill Classic grips absorbed the recoil without a problem. I was amazed at how well they distributed the recoil across the palm of my hand and how easy it was the grasp the gun without it shifting in my hand. Really a pleasure to shoot. I'm going to shoot the 629 Classic tomorrow with factory Winchester 240 grain jacketed soft point which are supposed to be at about 1150 fps. Will let you know how well the Nill Classics handle that challenge.

Well, I just returned from the range where I shot the 625 Classic and the 629 Classic. In a direct one to one comparo I much prefer the 45 Colt to the 44 Magnum. The hi vel 240 grain magnum was bordering on the unpleasant. The grips mitigated the recoil very well but they can only do so much. I think I'm going to develop a 290/300 grain load for the 44 Mag using bullets from Beartooth, probably starting with the Long Flat Nose Gas Check and the Wide Flat Nose GC. I'll let you know the results.
