Hi,
New to this forum. I recently bought a S&W Thunder Ranch mod 21-4 (used of course) with wood grips and the gold plated insignia on the side of the frame. I personally think it's a beautiful gun

My question is does anyone have any advice on the proper way to clean this gun without damage to the frame and the grips?

Thanks in advance for any help!

A good quality car wax (carnuba based) will clean and protect the outside of your revolver. The better car waxes that are safe for clear coats should be easy to find. You probably already have some. Polishes as opposed to quality car waxes tend to have abrasives in them so I avoid them.

I use a carnuba based bowling alley wax myself.

Welcome to the Forum.

I would go to a gun shop and buy a pistol cleaning kit. Hoppes No 9 solvent has worked for many, many years. Just don't use it on a nickel plated gun.

I like buying oversized bronze brushs for cleaning-.45 in a .44.

Thanks so much! I will give that a try. I appreciate your response!

Thank you. I do use Hoppes on all my other guns but a local gunsmith said not to use solvents. He said use 3 in 1 oil on the outside of the frame.... go figure. I will get some oversize brushes as you suggested. Thanks again for your response!
