Tips-another rant

When the service was really bad, my dad would leave a penny tip. My mother would flip and tell him that was worse than no tip at all, and my dad would invariably reply that's exactly the reason he did it. When the service was acceptable, he would always tip accordingly, sometimes really generously.

This one is good....my honey waited tables and tended bar. She always got good tips (great funny personality, fantastic legs!😁) One time a waitress was being a snot to her when she went out to dinner. 3 cent tip, placed on a white napkin. If you leave nothing they just think you are cheap.....tiny tips send a message.

When I was 20, I left a $0.01 tip for a steak dinner with my date at what at the time was kind of an upscale restaurant for me. The waiter, who was easily twice my age, was so incensed he came back to the table and threw a penny on the table in a huff.

I called for the manager and told him the waiter was terrible, so I gave him a terrible tip. The manager apologized to me, and told me that because the waiters were unionized and he could do nothing.

That's the only time I've done that. Nowadays I typically tip 20%, higher for exceptional service and if really, really bad, I'll give 'em 10 percent.

It's a tough job, waiting tables.
