I have a 586 no dash 4". I got it I believe, unfired. The first shot, the cylinder bolt stud broke off with the thumb button screw getting lost. I replaced promptly and no other problems other than poor accy. Yesterday It suffered a experienced case failure which introduced powder fouling some where in the frame window which made closing the cylinder difficult. I cleaned it up with my finger tip and it ran fine again, still not predictable bullet placement on cardboard boxes at 20 yard. 158g hard cast LSWC, some GC, most not GC, sized .3576". 10g HS-7 with cci mag primer, 6.5g 4756, mag, and 6g unique std. No leading of any kind. the cylinder gap is .008", no end shake. The forcing cone looks like piston rings in reverse, like installed into a cylinder rather than on a piston. After some 1000 rounds +, it is still not shooting well in my hands.
I shoot my 10-5 and 19-2 very well. Is 357 magnum shooting lead considered out side the envelope of accy compared to the 38 spcl?

So my question is if I send it to the orbital hover craft for the M treatment, what might I expect. Do they go thru the thing looking for problems to address? Might they hone the forcing cone etc? Should I retain my large factory grips? Should I ask for Custom Shop tune up?

As far as I know a no dash M586 would have been built in the early to mid 1980’s and way before S&W lifetime warranty. Secondly, you might want to have someone who is a competent shot try it and see where it shoots and how well for them. Looking at your group I’d raise the rear sight a few clicks and that should help bullet placement.

Unless you specify other items they would more than likely only address what you specify when sending it in. If only sent in the the M mod they would only do that unless something fell off during their work.

While it might be prudent to address the M recall I would not say to do it now because S&W has just moved and is in transition right now. Between the move, new employees and many many guns sent back for warranty repair, I’d probably wait a bit for the dust to settle.

I think I read that all revolver production is staying in Springfield for now. I don't know if that means revolver service work would be done there or not, but I would think it would be.

Sent my 681 in five or six years ago. Took about a month. Process was smooth, all they did was the recall work. Didn't ask for anything else and nothing was needed.

Sorry for the confusion. The pictured targets are from the 19-2, not the 586 in question. If I posted targets from the 586, there would not be any holes on the paper.

The "M" recall as you call it has nothing to due with "accuracy" It was for cylinders locking up

SW is not going to do anything as you are using reloads. If you test it with factory ammo and the accuracy still sucks then you can ask them about that.
