To Re-Load or Not???

Conversely, you want to also look for a case that is obviously over-charged.

Not an AR15 but I had to learn reb's advice the hard way.

After seeing this pic I will weigh EVERY ROUND!! I'd cry if that happened to my sport!

you will find that is is really difficult to double charge, and I weigh every round, but making a visual check is not hard nor time consuming and the safety fact is immeasurable. I am not so worried about an excess load as missing one, putting a bullet in it, the primer send the bullet into the barrel, the action doesnt cycle and a person cycles it and pulls the trigger putting a second bullet into the back of the first generally leading to a Kaboom. So I visually check mostly to see that the powder is the same as the rest. :D

It will probably take me an hour....

......to load a single round. Lol

There will be NO KABOOM in my rifle!!

zip,
After firing one squib round my routine now is that every step through priming can be done in batches. But once I drop powder in a case the next step is a visual check followed by seating a bullet.

Over charging a 223 case is not a real issue as a double charge will overflow the case. But when reloading pistol cartridges with fast powders like Bullseye or Unique, the chance of double or even triple charging becomes a very real (and scary) possibility.

Where you get into trouble with rifle cartridges is with squib (under powered) loads, either by forgetting to drop powder or dropping a light load of powder. This results in the bullet getting lodged in the barrel and is the source of John's "tap-rack-bang" warning. Failure to recognize that you fired a squib round may result in you chambering a fresh round and firing it into an obstructed barrel resulting in a KaBoom situation.

So take the time to listen and feel how your rifle cycles during normal operation. The spring noise and the buffer thump of a good round being fired needs to become ingrained in your memory so that any variation of the two will cause you to immediately cease firing and check the rifle for malfunction.

Sorry for the dire sounding post, but shoot safe so you can shoot often.

Merry Christmas, everyone.

Thanks to all for the cautions. By nature I am a super anal person when it comes to building anything. I'm the wacko that before vacation walks the house 3 and 4 times...checking every door lock / window / faucet. I even make sure I to an auditory check for running water in toilets / showers etc. THEN after locking the last door I check it all from the OUTSIDE. LOL

I drive my girl absolutely insane as she tries to patiently wait for me! After 6 years she is getting used to it however. Haha

You know....with this ban if it goes through and so few other rifles that shoot .223 I'm wondering if the ammo / reloading market will ever recover....or will it just be choked off?

May be the time ta start Loading my .357 and 9mm now with all the hullabaloo...

Well see if it dies off soon and then make mt decisions...

But my 223 stuff is already all on the way! Here's the first of it I wanna start now but somehow feel I don't quite have enough. LolView attachment 95549

I am still considering reloading but leaning very hard towards yes. I'm saving my brass and reading between the lines I did order a Lee .223 die set while they are still available (3 week lead time).

I will start piecing everything together in 1st quarter of next year. Thanks for the great discussion on this thread. Nothing like getting in depth details so nothing will be a surprise. Except for the surprises

You may also need a case trimmer if the brass has been previously fired, a primer pocket swager if the brass had crimped primers and a case neck deburring tool.

Case trimmer on the way. Not sure if the pocket swager comes in the kit I'll have to look. I know I did not order a debuting tool. I'm tempted to go find a few thousand prepped and primed brass. Haha!!

Well, my Wolf primers came in, so I'm good there. But my order for 4000 Hornady FMJBT from brassmanbrass.com came in 2000 short. I called them yesterday and they're out of Hornady so they're shipping me 2000 Armscor FMJ instead. So I guess I now have a supply of plinking bullets. haha

Ironic Bill my 2000 CCI #41s came in today as well. Still waiting on my powder and bullets from powdervalley. Natchez and brass man. Everyone is getting caught up.

Good news is mama got me a gift card from bass pro. Just ordered a Lyman dial caliper and hornady can lock bullet puller / #2 collet. :) sweet!!

No gift card from my wife, but she didn't bat an eye when I told her what the UPS guy delivered. I told her I ordered them before they were sold out and she just smiled and nodded. :)

She's a keeper!!!! Lol

After discussing it with Grover it appears that my new years resolution will be to sort the 2000 Armscor bullets by weight and length (and weed out any mis-shaped bullets in the process).

The range I shoot at gives me little other than accuracy to shoot for (no gongs or zombie targets allowed, so no real plinking to be done) so it's either sort them or sell them to a reloader with a slidefire. :D

I might be interested in any bullets you don't want. Some of my shooting is just for fun and skill training (raise rifle quickly to shoulder and fire at 25 and 50 yards) so super accuracy is not needed in those rounds.
