To Re-Load or Not???

Got my Hornady 223 neck sizing die in today. Set it up and ran some annealed Mossberg MVP shot brass through it. I resized 59 cases and had this happen to 11 of them...

I'm gonna take a guess that these cases may have been over annealed...the ones that I kept in the flame for a count too long. :o

The remainder of the cases turned out fine...

Now to reload them and see what advantage neck sizing brings to the table for me...aside from not having to lube the cases.:)

wow how did that happen? when you tried to seat a projectile?

My Hornady neck size die is basically an open body with a size ring for the neck and an expander ball/decapping rod. The shoulders collapsed on those cases just by running the case into the die.

I didn't have any issues FL resizing any of the annealed brass so the neck size die must put a bit more pressure on the neck.

I reloaded some of the neck sized cases this morning and after having to pull two bullets that seated too deep I attempted to use the neck size die on them again.

Crushed both cases. haha.

Looking at it now I think the problem I'm having is the expander ball getting stuck in the neck as it's entering the case. So as the case is pushed into the die the expander is pushing the neck down into the shoulder.

I did some research and found a post where the guy had to polish the expander plug on his Hornady die to get it to work right. So looks like it's time to chuck it in the drill press and run some Flitz on it.

Bill have you ever used a neck turning lathe? I am thinking on buying one.

Stav,
With a charge of 26.5 or 27 gr in the Sport I'm averaging 1.5-2" groups with the occasional sub-MOA group to keep me motivated. :)

Guys I have been on the 300 hand loading forum and I am having a argument with some guys. The New Hornady book has the case trim listed for the S & W 300 of 1.400, which is a whisper chamber and can safely fire blackout in it and now is corrected to show the blackout trim length of 1.368. Hornady even states the first is a non standard measurement.

Now the blackout has a trim length of 1.368 and whisper has a 1.400 and these two guys are arguing that the whisper is shorter then the blackout and I am saying the reverse. Please tell me I haven't lost my mind.

I quit using Hornady One Shot lube because it is more expensive than rcbs case lube and lube pad. There is a lot of wasted over spray. I can lube cases with the lube pad just as fast or faster then putting them in a loading block, spraying them and waiting for them to dry. One small bottle of rcbs will last forever.

I have been using the Mobil one ever since we saw that video, but I am still greasing with my fingers so I could go back to either RCBS or the Lee Case Lube. I have both plus the lyman spray on. I am trying to get some mink oil

The mink oil that Grover mentioned was my idea as it's essentially the same ingredient as Imperial Sizing Wax (lanolin).I didn't see any at my local Walmart, but when I went to the supermarket I saw a tin for $5 which is maybe 4x the size of a tin of Imperial Sizing Wax.

I'm to the point now where I only tumble my brass if it's new range pickups/once fired, or to get the Sharpie ink off of my test loads.

Natchez has 55 gr Hornady fmj boattail with cannelure in stock for $11.99, limit 10 in case anyone is interested. These are 100 bullet bags.

Well my journey down the rabbit hole continues with an order of 40 gr Nosler ballistic tip spitzer bullets. So between what I've bought and what Grover has sent me I'll have 40, 50, 53, 55, 60, 68, and 75 gr bullets to play with. Well, I'm down to the last 13 75s, but aside from getting them to stabilize out of my 1:9 Mossberg MVP barrel their accuracy has been pretty poor. They're definitely not a weight I'll stock up on in the future.

Once upon a time I was happy with the simplicity of reloading with one powder and one bullet. But I've found that, due to my limited target and range choices, without the experimentation shooting gets boring. :D

I have been SCOWERING high and low trying to find some New Rounds to test..

I have 40, 50, 55, 60gr Now.... Probobly wont do the testing I was gunna do Monday since i am doing the Hydro Buffer test...

So maybe next week..... Busting out the chrono and GOING TO TOWN.....:D

You haven't maxed out. :D Might need a thread on this... It "looks" like breathing from that group. Time to get into technique. Check your breathing. Take a couple breaths, let out slowly, hold on the bottom breath and slowly squeeze the trigger. See what that might help your groups.
