To Re-Load or Not???

Ok...to pick brains....does anyone shoot their reloads through a mini 14 also? What can I expect or do I need to make special loads for it. I was hoping that the rifle will shoot the same loads as the sport but is that just fantasy stuff or ?

I shoot the same rounds I make for my Modern Sporting Rifles as I do in the Mini-14, no changes, no problems, have shot thousands of the same reloads using the same formula and the Mini-14 can handle it, maybe not as accurate as the sport or the T but good enough for me.

Ok the twist rate as far as research will tell me is 1:10" but until I get the rifle in my hands next Saturday I wont know. But with an 18" barrel I should get complete powder burn and more velocity. Also I wont be hanging big glass off of this, I want it for light hunting, plinking and defense for the little animals we have here at the Farm (i.e. chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, pygmy goats, calves and horses). It has a Choate folding stock, a BSA red dot and a really ugly barrel shroud. I am hoping to find a wood/synthetic fixed stock to make it look more original.

Oh I definately am going to lose the barrel shroud.

I didnt want anyone to think that I was being a traitor to my beloved M&P15's but sometimes the offers just get too good and I still have one right next to me. I already know that it will not be my Sport, but it will serve its purpose and they are really cool.

I completely understand. On my other thread some thought me buying an ACOG was foolish if I could have gotten another rifle instead. Bottom line you can only shoot one at a time! Everyone makes the choices that are right for them! That's all that matters.

Thanks Zip...the only issue here is the sentimental value of that rifle. I am going to start a thread going through all the transformations of My "CyberSport", when it looked really good and when I stepped over the line. I didnt remember until I was going through pictures today that I have had 3 different times when I had one of these rifles zombie green, LMAO, they werent that pretty.

The lime green? That was a little loud. I'll look forward to seeing the transformation. No worries tho you can always transform another later! Project work!! It's all good brother. :)

If I got my fact on twist rate correct I don't think you will be able to run as high of a projectile range but should be better for lighter projectiles and she looks good Grover :D

From what I've read his fav flavor (55's) and even up into the high 60's he should be good to go. :)

Grover and I have been discussing twist rates and bullet weights. He sent me some 75 gr Hornady A-MAX to try out in my Mossberg, but the Hornady manual recommends 1:8 or faster twist. The Mossberg comes with a 1:9 but I told Grover I'd give it a whirl...

The A-MAXs are on the right, and no, they will not fit in a magazine :). COAL for those rounds is 2.563" which should put it about .010 short of the lands. I'm trying to find a load of WC844 that will duplicate the Hornady factory match ammo's 2790 fps out of a 24" bbl. The Hornady manual's test barrels for this bullet are 20" so it's a matter of trial and error based on BL-C(2) load data. Luckily 2790 fps should be a low to mid range load.

The rounds on the left and center are confirmation loads. The red ones are another batch of 55gr FMJ-BT over 27.5 gr of WC844. The purple rounds are the 68 gr BTHP over 24.3 gr of WC844, which matched the factory match ammo velocity last time.

With only sixty round to test I may try and sneak out to the range on Monday just to get these out of my system. :D

Hi guys...new problem. I traded for some once fire brass. It came beautifully cleaned but not decapped. So I have started decapping and resizing the brass. Out of the first 20 pieces I have had one not get stuck in the resizing die, they are getting plenty of lube, If I just decap and not resize they go into the Wilson Case Guage but the head sticks out a ways. I need some help on what to do. When I full length resize them they fit perfectly in the case guage but to get stuck in the sizing gauge

Dang Bill thats about the purtiest bunch of bullets I ever seed !! :D :D

So anyone having a problem resizing brass, they are either having to reform the neck or push the shouder back down

I use some Synthetic motor oil w5-30 on the 1st case when i start Decaping and Sizing...... If things get a little tight again after 40 or so, ill hit another one with oil

has always worked for me Grover.... maybe try that.. i did nlotice 5.56 Brass was a bit tighter than .223 when i just sized some recently.....

I am lubing the heck out of them...I have stuck cases in both of my dies. But if I just decap them they appear ready to go, I think I will have to load them and fireform them, I did some other cases and they went perfect I just dont know if they have been work hardened and need to be annealed, the problem is at the neck of the case. And it is just this one mirror shined bunch of brass.

they are all LC brass, looks to be 08 and has the Nato Cross on it. I have 300 rounds of it. I have decided to load up 25 rounds of it and take them out and carefully test fire them. The have been polished to Mirror like shine. I now have stuck 8 cases, so I have approach this differently and they fit into the Wilson Case Gauge so that is why I am thinking about shooting some.

I’ve never had any luck with petroleum or vegetable based oils or grease for sizing lube. I’ve had good results with just about all of the lanolin based case lubes and for serious case forming duties, Imperial sizing die wax.

The necks are oversized. Everything else is ok, you cannot even get them to crimp and hold a bullet it will hang in the cannula but isnt firm. I am thinking about getting a neck sizing die and after I run them through that then full size them. As it is I am just going to wash and dry my other ones I still have over 700 other pieces of brass to play with

Yup, it's a good idea to move onto something more productive. Send me a few and I'll see what my dies and Imperial sizing wax can do on them.

On a somewhat related note, my order of 1000 once-fired Winchester cases from brassmanbrass arrived today. The web sites lists them as having crimped primers but I don't see any indication that they are...no ring or color around the primers. I'll have to decap a couple and see if I can insert a primer into them.

Oh, and I was able to get an hour of range time in this morning. The 75gr A-MAX bullets punched nice round holes in my target at 100 yards so they stabilized fine out of my 24" 1:9 barrel. But all of my loads exceeded the 2790 fps target that I was looking for. So I'll have to cut the loads back and try again. I don't have many bullets left so I hope I get it right this time.

The guy I got the brass from said it had been fired from a full auto gun. Has anybody come up against this before? That the chamber on a full auto gun is a little bigger than the chamber on a semi-auto. Oh and Bill I am sending you some when I send the endine hydraulic buffer.
