Top 100 Movies

Don't worry...it's not a poll.

Looking for something to watch tonight I stumbled across a link to AFI's list of the top 100 films (according to them anyway). I was amused by the fact that I had only seen 30 of them, and I thought there must be something here worth spending a few hours on.

At number 8 was "Schindler's List". I went straight to my favorite pirate site and, due to it's huge popularity, was able to download the entire 1 gigabyte file in 25 minutes. I won't bore anyone with a review, as I'm sure everyone here probably saw it when it came out 17 years ago. Enough to say Black & White film-making has sadly become unfashionable these days. Great movie.

I'll add there really aren't too many more on that AFI list I want to see. Is "Citizen Kane" really any good?

Schindler's List... very good.

Citizen Kane... er.. well unfortunately I saw it when I was probably 10.... so I hated it! I keep meaning to re watch it though.

I have seen more flicks than I care to admit. I used to work at a video rental store and got 5 free movies a week... I've also been a member of Netflix and Blockbuster Online.

You said Schindler's List was at #8, not #9 which means you looked at the 2007 list, not the 1998 which is good. The 1998 list ignored silent films and newer ones.

Citizen Kane is sort of an art film, it's kind of weird. If you like that sort of stuff then it's great. If I were going to watch an art film I would choose Akira Kurwosawa's "Dreams". I did not see any Kurosawa films on the AFI top 100 though I feel there are at least 3 that should be on there, The Seven Samuria, Yojimbo, and Rashomon.

I am big fan of Akira Kurwosawa's. Lot's of people don't like subtitles but they are missing some great movies.

On order to be considered, the film has to be an English language film with with production from the United States.

It IS the American Film Institute after all!

IMHO Citizen Kane[thinly veiled story of newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst] is a great movie.Top 100 is great also.

I have seen at least 3/4 of the AFI top 100.
I am just some random joe on a board, but IMHO, some of the older films really do not seem to hold up well. That may just be my own preferences at work.

I've always thought that the newer films don't do very well.

My list after 1975 gets shorter...

99% of everything made in the last 10 years, is junk, IMHO, but I'm just cranky and old.

I am still glad Singing In The Rain is still in there.

I've seen 81 of the top 100.
Citizen Kane may be the best directed, acted and photographed movie ever made. Too bad it's just not interesting.
I STILL haven't seen Schindlers List. Though I'm not Jewish I think it would be too painful to watch. The concentration camp scene in Band of Brothers was disturbing enough.

All I know is the greatest film ever made was The Godfather...it only came in number #3 because the AFI is prejudiced against Italians.

I'm sure I've seen 50 on the list. There are three or four others that I might have seen.
A lot of them were watched on an old black and white TV when I was 12 years old. We had just come back to the states from a place where TV was still a rumor and watched a lot of it for eight months. Then left for another place where TV was a rumor.

I would take some of the films off the list entirely.
I would substitute The Shootist for The Searchers.
I saw The Searchers in the theater when it came out and thought it was a great movie. A couple years ago I rented it and found I didn't like it near as much. (Lousy gun handling all around, for one thing.)

I own a DVD of The Shootist.

The last few years I have been watching older movies,1938 through 1955 or so. I'm a Bogart fan and have been seeking out his movies. Also like Edward G Robinson, James Cagney.
I lean toward the old gangster or war movies with some westerns mixed in for spice.
I actually sought out Citizen Kane because of this list. It was on in the middle of the night on AMC, so I recorded it (I love the DVR feature on the cable box, I now could not watch TV without it now.) Then on the weekend I made fresh popcorn Got an ice cold pop and sat down to watch it. Boy was I pissed! Thats two hours of my life Iwill never get back.John

My favorite "bad" movie is The Fifth Element.

I really enjoy it, yet so many people tell me it's terrible (which I can see... but not to me!)
