I'm going to scratch the itch to buy a new toy in the near future and I'm having a little trouble deciding what to buy. I've narrowed it down to a S&W revolver chambered in either the .357mag or .45acp but the .44mag started sneaking into the picture which opened me up to thinking about maybe another .500! What's your favorite round for a revolver and why?

My other guns shoot .357, .45acp, 45 Colt and .38 special.

I don't hunt much and for me the .500 was too impractical for me in the past but, something about owning one again makes me smile.

vjp, have you ruled out a .22 LR ?? That would open you up to many possibilities. I admit I'm trying to suppress my own desires for a .44 mag. Just sayin' if you don't have a K 22 you should give it some thought.

If you don't reload the center fire guns can be expensive. With a 22 you can shoot and concentrate on accuracy or have fun and save the big boys if you need to feel the recoil. Larry

I agree a 22LR caliber revolver might be of interest to you and is a great choice and based on your other guns the only other choice is a 44 magnum..

.357 and .44.

I like the .357 for protection of me. I like the .44 too. Just because.

Well, I have two 500s, six 44 mags, more 357s than I care for count, and quite a few 22s, plus a few other calibers. That is in revolvers, does not include the semi-autos. I recommend a 500, a 44 and a 22, all are fun. The 22 will be the most practical, and s good 22 can be a lot of fun, especially an accurate one, such as a K-22 (17 series). The 44 and 500 command their own special niches, and are great fun, as well. Reloading is highly recommended for either, especially the 500, both for reasons of expense and to take advantage of the tremendous flexibility offered by both calibers. BTW, I went shooting yesterday, and took only a couple of 22 handguns, left the big noomers at home (O shot them a few days earlier, though). 300+ rounds of good clean fun, and great practice at ranges from 25 to 100 yards (I like long range shooting with handguns for the challenge). Good luck with your decision.

I like the 357. Great round for a revolver or rifle.

My 625's are my most pleasurable big bore handguns (.45 ACP/Auto Rim). They lend themselves nicely for reloading, allow exceptionally quick reloads (with full moon clips) and shoot extremely well.

Hard to go wrong with a good .45 ACP revolver.

go with a 460....fits the bill for 3 different calibers....all in the 45 family....plinking 45 colt, bruiser 454's and blistering fast 460S&W's...

Thanks for the advice guys. A good .22 LR would be an excellent addition, I never gave that one any thought. I was really leaning toward a .45acp but the only one that I can find within driving distance is a 325 NG. I'm not sure if I like the NG line but it would complement the Governor that I have.

I'm not one to buy guns online, I like to hold um before I buy um, so I have a road trip planned this weekend to hit my local gun shops to see what they have to offer. Maybe I'll get lucky and run across "the one that speaks to me" and take it home.

I'd probably do just that if I could find one. I like the guns that will shoot different rounds.

If you do not hunt, then you do not need the power of a 44 Mag or a
500... [Notice I said need, which is not the same as WANT...]

So I would recommend a S&W in 45 ACP.

I'm with the rimfire guys. But if a 17 or 617 is your choice, it will be harder to find locally and you likely will pay more for it than a centerfire. If you do go for a centerfire, I would buy a .44 Magnum. After all, you don't have one. And they can be handloaded down or shoot .44 Specials for target and practice as well as full-power loads if you ever want to hunt with it.

I have S&W's in almost every caliber from .22 up to 44 mag. (Don't have desire for anything bigger). That includes 45acp and 9mm in revolvers (sorry, no 10 mm, but sort of looking). By far the .22 is the most used, along with the various 38's. The only thing I shoot more of is 12 gauge.

for a centerfire revolver i like the s&w 627-5pc.(why?) 357 or 38 special. can use with or without the moon clips that make for fast reloads. 8 shot. 357 can reloaded from 700 fps up to 2400 fps. ammo a brass are easy to find. great accuracy. comes with 2 grip sets. its a smith. love mine.
i also have the 625jm thats a great gun just not as many rounds or range of ammo as the 627. smoother action and lighter trigger pull than the 627pc.

I find the 44 is about all the gun I care to target shoot with. If you don't already load your own ammo I would give that serious consideration, you'll be glad you did at about the cost of another gun.

I would choose a 44mag over a 45 acp because... factory 44 specials are ballistically similar to 45 acp. And, with full power 44 mag ammo, you get to scratch some of that big gun itch too. But a .22 is good for hours of cheap range shooting.
