3rd Generation traditional double action / single action S&W Semi-automatic pistol with stainless steel slide and alloy frame. Good pistol.

Dancer, the 5903 is an excellent pistol. I used to carry a 5904(same thing, just black) on duty. The frame thing with letters pertains to revolvers, J being the smallest(5 shot 38), then K, L, N, and finally X( 500 &460). Get a bunch of 15, 17 or 20 rd. mags while you can and enjoy!!

Here goes, (with some model number examples):

Revolvers:
I & J= small frame revolvers (31, 36, 40)
K= medium frame revolvers (19, 17)
L= slightly larger medium frame revolvers (586, 686)
N= large frame revolvers (27,29,629)
X= giganto frame revolvers (500)

Pistols:

1st generation= original S&W auto loaders (39, 59)
2nd generation= next generation auto loaders (559, 659)
3rd generation= next generation basic design auto loaders (909, 410, 5903, 5906, 4506)
TSW=Tactical Smith & Wesson= newest design metal frame tactial pistols (5906TSW, 4006TSW)

That's right off the top of the head, so if I mis-characterized something, I'm sure that another forum member will correct me.

Welcome and good luck!

Where does the model 10 fit in frame wise?? K or L?

Hope to take it to the range pretty soon, geting a bit antsy to see how it shoots. It sure fels goos in my hand.

If you really want to see the amazing variety of Swith and Messins out there, get the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson by Supica and Nahas.

Lots of pretty pictures too.
